Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:00, ate a peanut butter and banana sandwich like usual, walked the dog, and loaded my transition bag in the car. We had to rack our bikes the night before and it wasn't wetsuit legal so there wasn't much stuff to worry about. Very nice! This was the first tri that I have done where I stayed at home the night before. The other races were in Philly so I was in a hotel. It felt a little strange heading to a race from home.
Event warmup:

Not much. I had a LONG wait from the time transition closed to my swim wave (a little under 2 hours!) start. I walked around a lot, took some pictures, met up with my family, and stood in the port-o-potty line twice. They seemed exceptionally nasty, but I had to pee so bad I didn't really have a choice but to wait because my swim wave wasn't going off any time soon! By the time my wave started, I was ready to go.
Swim
  • 23m 32s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

For the amount of time I spend in the pool, this swim was OK. I had to switch over to breast stroke more times than I wanted to. This was my first tri without a wetsuit and the longest open water swim distance that I've done so far. I'm slow and steady in the water. I just wish my "slow and steady" was a little faster :)
What would you do differently?:

Make an effort to get in the pool more. My time accurately reflects the training that I do in the pool. I would also like to be able to swim the entire course using freestyle.
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

12/216 AG and 106/1632 OA. Not bad considering I made a decision before the race to use platform pedals so I had to put my shoes & sock on and tie them. If I had used bike shoes like I should have, this would have been faster.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This transition went well. I would have used bike shoes and clipped in instead of using running shoes and platform pedals, but at this point I didn't know that.
Bike
  • 1h 06m 32s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 15.78 mile/hr
Comments:

Ahhhh...the bike.. my nemesis. My left knee has been bothering me and I think it has to do with my foot position on the bike. I think need to adjust the position of the cleat. I don't spend a lot of time biking and this has just started happening recently so I made the decision to not clip in because I haven't had time to futz with the cleat position. Bad move. My feet slipped off the pedals three times. I, however, didn't have any knee pain. I'm not sure if it was good for me to risk my safety to save my knee from hurting (probably a good idea since MCM is coming up, but it still sucked.)

I thought this was a tough bike course. There were some good hills and they were difficult to ride. I also spent a good bit of time coasting and breaking on the downhills. I'm not a good cyclist and HAVE to spend more time out on the road to work on my confidence. Confidence is key. The fitness is there. I would pass people on the flats and uphills and they would blow by me on the downhill. How frustrating. I need to grow some balls.
What would you do differently?:

Get outside and ride. It's that simple. Clip in (with the cleat in the correct position)
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Speedy T1. I didn't have shoes to worry about so I just racked my bike and went.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. This went well!
Run
  • 28m 41s
  • 3.4 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a difficult course and my quads were letting me know they weren't happy. I only got passed one time on the run (by one of the relay runners.) I really like seeing someone in my AG ahead of me since it really pushes me to try and get past them. I'm thrilled with my run performance, especially since I didn't get passed. The pace was kind of slow, but I think that reflects the difficulty of the course. Hilly!!

I saw MelissaE out there looking strong! Seeing a fellow BTer was a good mental pickup because my legs were pretty tired at that point.
What would you do differently?:

I was happy with this run. I would have liked to see my pace under 8:00/mile, but my legs were screaming so I did the best I could with it.
Post race
Warm down:

Found my family and Steve then went out for lunch. We didn't hang around for very long after the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The bike. It's always the bike. I know how to fix it though.... TITS!!

Event comments:

This was a wonderful race. Very organized and it had a good vibe. I'm planning on doing it again next year!

I had to go back and read this RR again because I was wondering why your family was being exceptionally nasty.  Glad I re-read it.  And any RR that talks about balls and is a winner.  Nice job out there today!  You'll go sub-8 soon on the run.

Great race, Traci! From what I hear, that's a pretty tough course. When you grow those balls, would you mind lending them to me every so often?

Uhhh, having balls isn't what it's all cracked up to be.  They get in the way on the bike.

You have a thing for the number two - 2 hr 2 min 22 sec. - is it your lucky mantra number?

Nice job!!

You are a terrific athlete, Traci, and had a great race!  I can definitely help you with biking downhill as I am one of those women you pass going uphill who re-passes you going downhill.  First thing you need to do is go get professionally fit on your bike with your pedals and shoes.  They might recommend something different.  Let's get rid of that knee pain before you do anything else. I think you have nowhere to go but up from here!

Great Race.  I'll help you with biking if you could make run as fast as you do.  I agree with Melissa you need to get a bike fit.  I had foot problems on the bike and didn't realize the cleats were in the wrong position.  Once you get fitted you'll feel so much better.

Kudos VBall!

I'm not a bike fitter, but if you didn't have knee pain with platforms, maybe a pedal/cleat that had more "float" (lets your ankle rotate more before unclipping) might be better.

Like me, your swim time reflects low pool time.  However, we should both remember that it's probably not a fitness thing as much as a technique thing.

My pool time is suffering because my pool is closed and the alternate (smaller) facility is PACKED with all the people from both pools.  It's also farther away.  If I had a wetsuit I'd just go do more OWS but with the summer jellyfish (sea nettles) I'm not swimming without coverage.  All of this I tell you as a *HINT HINT* that if you want a stroke critique from someone who is slightly faster than you despite swimming about the same amount (or less), I'd be glad to exchange that for a visitor pass at your pool.  My I'm selfless

Great job on your "girl power" race.  I'm sure 2:00 is in the bag next year.  We can come up with two minutes no problem... start your catch earlier, transition efficiency, pedals/cleats with no pain, and marathon legs that now only have to go 5K, and I suspect 2:00 is not a tough enough goal!

Awesome!  It was hot out there....and it iss a tough course.  I was volunteering at the Gatorade hill and then went out and did the bike and run after, and I'm impressed how hard most were running (made me feel weak!).

I wish I had known ya to give you a personal sponge bath!   great job!!

Hi Traci!  Great RR.  You are a wicked fast runner and will do extremely well when the other two legs fall into place, which I have no doubt will happen very soon.  You're a great athlete!

I wish I had more time to talk to you at the pre-race dinner, but being on opposite ends of the table didn't work out.  Are you an alum of Maryland?

Congrats on the finish and strong AG placing!!

Alright ...... it's time for me to put together a local ride with my MD/VA peeps so I give a damn clinic on descending and climbing ........ I'm getting tired of reading local race reports and seeing comments about those two .......

Cool
