Total Time = 1h 31m 20s
Overall Rank = 103/394
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 15/44
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45, ate a Cliff bar and had a cup of coffee and some Gatorade. We drove down to the race site, I wanted to get there early and get a parking spot.Picked up my packet, set up my transition area and tried to stay warm:) Lack of races this year showed as I almost forgot to put my chip on, and had to go back to the car to get my swim cap.
Event warmup:

I rode for 10 minutes, decided not to chance a run warmup in case the calf bothered me. I was worried that if i felt anything it would mentally effect my swim and bike. Decided not to do any swim warmup because I would be cold.
Swim
  • 14m 47s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim, my plan was to go hard> I wanted to come out of the water in the top ten.
What would you do differently?:

I got pushed a little to the left on the start, I should have started right in the middle in front. Also I forgot about the sun, after you round the second to last buoy it's right in you face and you cannot see the next buoy, maybe mirrored goggles would work better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Nothing spectacular on the transition, just tried to be smooth.
Bike
  • 50m 32s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 22.13 mile/hr
Comments:

I tried to push it on the bike, I passed some people and my goal was to not get passed by anyone in my age group. My lack of endurance showed as I got passed by a few people in my age group within the last 5 miles or so.
I was still pretty happy with my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Need more endurance and hill work. I might have lost a minute or so getting stuck behind a white pickup truck that would not go around the riders, I don't know if he was just being a jerk or did not know what to do.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Nothing out of the ordinary.
Run
  • 23m 43s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

The run course was much easier this year, the temps were much lower than last year. I was not sure what to expect on the run, I just tried to keep and even effort and slow down when I felt any calf pain.
What would you do differently?:

I'm actually pretty surprised and happy with my run, my time was not that much slower than last years run, and that's when my run volume was much higher.
Post race
Warm down:

Went to the finish line to cheer on a couple of other racers from our tri club that had not finished yet. Saw Keyone (Carol) come across the line looking strong.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The usuall, not enough biking or running, but I'm working on that:)

Event comments:

I had fun, not sure I will do this race again next year as it's 4 hours away from home.

Congratulations on a great race!  I think your paces were awesome!  They are even more impressive considering that you haven't been able to train at 100% because of your calf injury.  Great job!
