Virginia Triathlon Series, Set-Up Inc.
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 02m 58s
Overall Rank = 429/519
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 16/20
Pre-race routine:

5:30 wake-up with shower, a little stretching and breakfast (english muffin with bacon; coffee; EFS electroyte drink). Arrived at transition with about 45 minutes to race start. Set up space and got ready for swim with stretching and brief warm-up. Very nervous about first OWS without a wetsuit.
Swim
  • 28m 34s
  • 820 yards
  • 03m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

1st OWS sans wetsuit. Very nervous to start, but got rhythm and swam until I got tired. Started out too fast (as usual), but was surprised with comfort in the water and swim stroke, once relaxed. Time was slowed down tremendously by breaks and resting. Was the last person out of the water (not at all concerned, but did provide good photo opps. :)).
What would you do differently?:

Relax early and keep swimming more often! Still a newbie (less than a year into biking and swimming). Love the progress I'm seeing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Took my time. A 'training' tri so went about everything deliberately and took in a gel and some water/electrolyte drink.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 58m 40s
  • 15 miles
  • 15.34 mile/hr
Comments:

Enjoyed the bike. Hills took more out of me than I imagined they would. A very hilly course that provided very good downhill speeds, but tough uphills. :) Surprised by how slowly I must have moved up some of the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Prepare with more hill work. Keep hill work in program, regardless of plan chosen. Very important and will keep working to maintain speeds on hills.
Transition 2
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

See previous transition description. Getting hotter and just got moving on to the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 31m 7s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Easy, slow run. Worked on form and trying to stay on forefoot. Much less 'painful' and bone-jarring with forefoot running. Hot on course, but good shade breaks.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching and re-hydration with Mix-1 drink and an apple. Did not eat immediately, but went back for a very good brunch at one of local diners in downtown Culpeper. Had the best omelet ever. Excellent meal!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Desire to see where 'weaknesses' were in training and in each event.

Event comments:

Will keep this race in my annual plans. A perfect tune-up/assessment race for Chicago Olympic.
