Overall Rank = 485/632
Age Group = 40-44 F
Age Group Rank = 26/37
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5 a.m., had cheerios, blueberries and coffee. Loaded up car and woke up 11-year-old son, Nick, who is my chief fan. Drove the 1+ hour to the race site, parked next to Marmadaddy (!), and then waited on line for 30 minutes to pick up my packet.
Event warmup:

Didn't have time for any. I was in 5th wave, ate a gel as the first wave started.
Swim
  • 34m 23s
  • 1500 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swimming is my weakest out of the three. This is the third time I've done this race and this year I felt the most comfortable in the water. I didn't "panic" in the beginning. I developed a good rhythm, I stayed on course (I usually veer off course), and I finished feeling good.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster?

2006 - 34:13 (KathyG says the course was shorter then)
2007 - 33:51
2008 - 34:23

Bike
  • 1h 22m 6s
  • 25 miles
  • 18.27 mile/hr
Comments:

Last year I went too hard on the bike and paid for it on the run, so this year I made sure that I maintained a consistent pace that didn't feel like I was pushing too hard. The first 10 miles or so there were two 25-year-old women who continually would pass me up hills (they would hammer up the hills out of their saddles), ride double-breasted, and make it difficult to pass them on the flats and descents. It was causing problems for the guys in the wave behind us who were riding 21 mph, and making things unsafe... I finally shook them and found somebody to pace off of the rest of the race.
Transition 2
  • 02m 39s
Run
  • 59m 51s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Scott was just ahead of me out of T2, walking off a side stitch... caught up with DK around mile 1, chatted for a bit, then continued on... saw Jam Jam around mile 2, walking off some dizzyness....
I plodded along, my quads and glutes were cramping up...
Post race
Warm down:

walked and talked

Event comments:

This is such a fun race, and it was great seeing all the bters. Sue up from Florida (with her awesome parents), Marmadaddy, Jam Jam and their cute daughters from Rochester, Kathy G and some of her family volunteering, Isis volunteering.... catching up with folks before Nick and I had to head back home.

Great race and nice job pacing on the bike.  You are always a fast runner.  I also believe the swim was short 2 years ago.  Nice to Nick there, too.

What a great race for you! You looked relaxed and at ease throughout-and comfortable after..No injuries or equipment malfunctions to mess you up..It was pretty warm out there -you clearly had your nutrition'hydration nailed..glad to see you have a good time and good results..Congrats!

Really good to see you again-and nick is a hoot.

I have a nice pix of you-just have to figure out how to convert from camera pixels to BT-able..coming soon!
