Veteran 248 Mooretown, Ontario Canada | Subject: Garmin users for IM run So, what do you do with your garmin for the run. IMKY athlete guide says that you will not have access to your T2 bag on race morning, so I can't turn it on then. Battery won't last all night. I'm thinking I'll have to put it in my T1 bag, wear it on the bike and just turn it on as I'm coming into T2. I'd just turn it on as I head out for the run, but I've had times were it just won't lock in while I'm running, until I stop. And I don't really want to stop. Anyway, any suggestions or past experiences? FishHog |

I would agree with Jeepfleeb, just take a second and set it up to help settle yourself down, a word of caution, if you put it on the bike, make sure you can get it off, in CDA there were a lot of people that had a very hard time getting it back off the handlebars or where ever they had it, practice getting back off after a long ride. Good luck! Edited by hazmaster 2008-08-26 4:31 PM |

It is not like volunteering at your local sprints.hazmaster - 2008-08-26 4:28 PM SuzanneS - 2008-08-26 1:59 PM " Give it to a volunteer to stand still with while it synches up. I disagree. I've had volunteers massaging my legs, rubbing sunscreen on me, cleaning my sunglasses, repacking my bags, etc; all at the same time. Standing still and holding a watch isn't much. IM volunteers go a long way. As long there is a volunteer available, they'll do anything for you short of running the race. |

I was only suggesting that the OP understand that they may not have a volunteer available to set up the Garmin. Yes there are volunteers are available to do the above mentioned tasks, HOWEVER!!! Have you had to wait in line gettting sunscreen? waited for your gear bag? waited for a massage? Perhaps I worded my response incorectly, if the OP is worried about spending time waiting for their Garmin to p/u a satilite, a volunteer MAY not be available. "Over the top" were the wrong words. Again good luck. Edited by hazmaster 2008-08-26 4:57 PM |

Extreme Veteran 981 Maryland | Subject: RE: Garmin users for IM run FishHog, Make sure you have your Garmin updated to the latest software. I had the problem with not settling on the signal while moving as well, but then saw that they fixed that problem: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3289 Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.90: * Improved ability to acquire a satellite fix while moving around warming up and stretching. Since I made this change, I do not have this issue at all. Before then, sometimes I could make it through a whole run before it synced up. I have read stories of people having their Forerunner last throughout the bike and the run, and if you can turn off certain functions that will help as well. You can turn off some of the alerts, as well as auto-lapping. For IMFL I actually used two Forerunners. :-) Very cool indeed. You could always borrow a buddy's. He'd probably like the idea that his Garmin was used in an Ironman. |

Master 1661 Newbury Park, CA | Subject: RE: Garmin users for IM run You can just turn it on as soon as it comes out of your run bag, do your normal transition, and head out on the run. When it locks on to the satellite it locks on and you'll have your pace. Run will still be 26.2 miles, how big of a deal will it be if your Garmin shows 26.07? Do remember to turn it on and let it find the satellites in Kentucky before packing it in your bag. No sense running along and seeing "Have you moved more than 500 miles since you last....." Just sayin. |

I guess the only way to have the Garmin and race time would be to have my regular watch on on wrist and the Garmin on the other which I dont want. Any suggestions?? |

Just sayin. Not a big deal if it locks, but I've had it take a few minutes after I stopped to lock in. And I had to stop, as it just wouldn't lock. I do have the new updates, so maybe I'll just experiment in Louisville when I get there and see. Can't say I've tried it lately. I actually have 2 garmins, but one is staying on the bike. The other I bought a battery charger for that lasts 12hrs, and figured I'd turn it on just before the race, and just pull it off the charger in T2 and go. But, if I can't access the bag race morning, it just isn't going to last that long. thanks for the suggestions everyone. FishHog |

Member 54 | Subject: RE: Garmin users for IM run I turned my garmin on at T2 then chenged clothes. It was synced up by the time I was done. I totally had my regular watch on one wrist and Garmin on the other. +1 on the making sure you acuire a signal prior to packing in T2 bag, then turn back off. |

Haven't done a full IM but I did this for a HIM. I actaully do this for all my races regardles of distances.
Start stopwatch when the horn goes off. (it's actually a polar HRM but I don't wear the strap)
T1- Hit Lap button Bike-Hit lap button again. I don't look at the watch on the bike. Have a bike computer for that. T2-Hit lap again. I usually grab my garmin as I;m running out of T2. While running I put on my garmin, and start it. You lose a half mile at most...eh life goes on. Take off stopwatch and shove it in pocket. No more wearing two watches When I'm trying to HTFU and run harder I'll take it out of my pocket since i can see total elapsed time "oh look, if I HTFU and run faster I can break xx:xx time"
I fully expect 100s of posts totally disaproving of this. I don't really care.
This is exactly what I plan to do. I have a watch to tell me total time, swim time, bike time, run time, and Transitions times. But the point of putting on my Garmin in T2 is to have it available on the run to tell me my current pace so I can stick to my pacing plan. BTW, when I use my Garmin to track pace, I NEVER look at the Current Pace stat. It can tend to spike and so the moment you look at it you might not get an accurate picture of what you are doing. I always use the stat "Lap Pace" to track my current pace. Effectively, this stat says, "Keep running like this, and you are projected to finish this current mile in X". It doesn't matter when I get the signal because I am only using it to control my pace. Tracking mile splits is nice too. But my total run time will be tracked on my watch. |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Garmin users for IM run I figure as long as you know about how long you have to finish the run after you get off the bike that is all you need. The watch is a good reminder of how fast you are going and if you can make cut offs. The HR feature is nice also. 6.5 hours and your pretty much set to finish regardless of when you get off the time. For me I would have the time as one of my 4 boxes so I know just how long I have until midnight. |
