What's up, everyone...

After a couple years of road bike racing and dealing with people who were willing to take stupid risks in the name of winning a T-shirt, I was out of racing for a while. Then work got insanely busy and the excuses to not ride piled up.

So, after a year of relative inactivity and gaining 25 pounds, I learned that my wife was pregnant. For some reason that was a total wake-up call for me, and I re-committed myself to my health and fitness so I could have the energy to work my 80 hour a week job, help my wife through her pregnancy, and not have a heart attack before my kid goes to college. I started out running because it was easy and convenient from work, but then I started missing the bike. I'm kinda over the crit scene, so I decided to try some TT's. Turns out there are almost no TT's in this area. So it was a natural logical progression--I was already running, craved the biking, and if I could just learn to swim I could do Tris!

Off to the pool I went, and I found that with a little improvement in my technique (Thanks, Total Immersion) I could fairly comfortably swim a 400. So I decided I'd give the triathlon thing a shot. I also find myself drawn to the much more social/chill/supportive nature of the tri scene compared to road racing...

I live in Laurel, MD, and signed myself up for the Cape Henlopen Tri at the end of September. It won't be pretty or particularly fast, but I'm looking forward to it.

Hope to see you all out there-- I'll be the slow clydesdale on the bike that's too good for him.

Very cool!

I'm in the Army and live kinda close to Ft. Meade, so I do a fair amount of riding there. There's a ton of riding that I enjoy doing on my road bike, but I'm still looking for some good rides for the Tri bike. I'd love to know of any of your favorite rides...

If you ever feel like a ride or a glacially slow run, PM me sometime.

Welcome to BT and congrats on the baby!  Make sure you add the Cape Henlopen race to your race calendar here on BT so you're on the list of participants.  I'm doing it and so is Rick (Daremo) and a few other people.  Happy training!

Welcome
The Columbia Maryland Triathlon (Olympic) is a super event. There are only a few slots left for May 2009. You may want to consider it!

Good Luck

Yeah, I was looking at that, but not sure I'll be ready for an oly in the fall... Perhaps surviving a sprint will give me the off-season inspiration I need.

Dr. Pete,

Welcome! I'm just getting back into training myself and don't think I can get into shape for a even a sprint this fall.  I am working on a conditioning program through the fall and winter and hope to be ready by spring. I'm down the road in Glen Burnie, so if you need someone that is probably slower than you, let me know.

Stuart-- I can turn a pretty decent bike split, but I still suck at swimming and I time my runs with a sundial. I think the slowness competition might be closer than you think.

Any good tri bike-friendly rides out that way? Ft. Meade is the closest thing I've got for some flat fast roads, but a change of scenery is always nice...

the problem is that I get back from a vacation in Montana, which will include VERY limited training (race recovery and then backpacking trip)... and I get back at 11:30PM on the 27th.

Very cool... I'm getting all excited (and broke) getting ready for my first Tri. Got the wetsuit, Tri suit, Tri/TT bike, the whole 9. And I just got a silly discount on some Blackwell Research race wheels. Gotta love companies with a military discount...

I'm curious to know what you guys think--is it realistic to shoot for an Oly in the spring if Henlopen will be my first tri? I guess the big thing is that training for a sprint tri is much easier to fit into my insane schedule...

Yes.  There is plenty of time to train and build your base up.

I'm doing the Make-A-Wish oly. the week before Henlopen then leaving my tri gear down at the shore at my Aunt-in-law's place so I don't have to travel with it each weekend.

Welcome to the site and the sport!  I'm just down the proverbial street from you and vball - in Fulton.
