Subject: Greets from MD's latest tri newbie What's up, everyone... After a couple years of road bike racing and dealing with people who were willing to take stupid risks in the name of winning a T-shirt, I was out of racing for a while. Then work got insanely busy and the excuses to not ride piled up. So, after a year of relative inactivity and gaining 25 pounds, I learned that my wife was pregnant. For some reason that was a total wake-up call for me, and I re-committed myself to my health and fitness so I could have the energy to work my 80 hour a week job, help my wife through her pregnancy, and not have a heart attack before my kid goes to college. I started out running because it was easy and convenient from work, but then I started missing the bike. I'm kinda over the crit scene, so I decided to try some TT's. Turns out there are almost no TT's in this area. So it was a natural logical progression--I was already running, craved the biking, and if I could just learn to swim I could do Tris! Off to the pool I went, and I found that with a little improvement in my technique (Thanks, Total Immersion) I could fairly comfortably swim a 400. So I decided I'd give the triathlon thing a shot. I also find myself drawn to the much more social/chill/supportive nature of the tri scene compared to road racing... I live in Laurel, MD, and signed myself up for the Cape Henlopen Tri at the end of September. It won't be pretty or particularly fast, but I'm looking forward to it. Hope to see you all out there-- I'll be the slow clydesdale on the bike that's too good for him. |
