Subject: Bike repair (or new bike) question . . . :)
Hi.

I recently did the Accenture Chicago Oly and noticed that when I was reassembling the bike back home that there appears to be a crack (with some play) in the bottom of the head tube (directly above the fork assembly). I noticed some 'wobble'/play at the end of the ride, but luckily the bike didn't fall apart on the ride. For what it's worth in any suggestions/assessments, I'm a Clyde (217 lbs) and managed to maintain a decent speed on the course (i.e., didn't slow down for all bumps), but I felt like the bike might, literally, come apart at times on the route.

I have not yet taken it to my LBS, but may do so today as my training will pick-up again on Sunday.

Any suggestions/advice are appreciated. This might be my excuse to get a new bike!

Thanks!

Happy training!

-TJ

If it's a really nice steel or titanium frame, you might be able to have the head tube replaced cheaper than a new frame. Otherwise start visiting the LBS's...

Do you really want to tempt fate descending a hill at 40 MPH with a cracked frame? I'd replace.

Luckily, it's not a super nice frame!! Looking forward to the LBS visits and a new ride!!!

I'll post pics of new ride once purchased! I'll officially retire the old bike tonight!

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions!

Happy training!

Don't know what state the bike components are in, but you can of course just buy a new frame and move everything over from the old one.

Lake shore drive will destroy any bike! That road was horrible.

Sounds like you need a new frame though... start looking

You could use the old bike as a permanent fixture on the stationary trainer.
