Pre-race routine:

This race was a real mental challenge getting here. In the midst of a marriage break up my training really fell apart in the last 4 weeks. I had no routine planned other than trying to get this race started and completed.
We were staying at a campsite that wasn't very quiet at night, however the night before Ironman was the best sleep I had all week. I began the day of 3:45 am. Drank a Powerbar recovery shake and ate a cinnamon raisin bagel. Went to the the shower & began the mental focus there. I thought to myself "I'm going to do great, I deserve this & I need to complete to begin my new life". I kept those thoughts & we drove to the race sight. The thoughts were positive & the best I had all week. Through out the week I listen to Nine Inch Nails...to give you an idea as to where my head was at. The night before I listen to Bruce Cockburn & he always brings me back to ground level.
Once at race sight, first used the porta potties (long line up right away) then pumped up my tires. Saw Freezerburn & wished her good luck. Saw smartcicle & weigh2go in the water & we wished each other luck. I got an opportunity with weigh2go alone in the water & hug her and kissed her, told her that I loved her. Then we separated & I did cry at that point. I knew it was the last kiss & also it was a final send off of our separate ways. I hated this race & embraced the changed at the same time.
Event warmup:

Stood in the water & adjusted to the water temperature, it was 19 degrees celsius. A cold temperature for the longest swim I ever done.
The music started, Fatboy Slim "right here, right now". It got my body moving & it regrouped my thoughts. This was my race and only my race. The body was focused, then it changed to Bittersweet Symphonies & I was calm. This was the calmest I have ever been before a race & yet today it was Ironman!
Saw the bluff across the bay and thought "boy that's far away". The gun went off!
Swim
  • 1h 30m 39s
  • 3862 meters
  • 02m 21s / 100 meters
Comments:

I'm a week swimmer but have come to terms with that a long time ago. I started in mid pack, I've decided to take part in the washing machine for the experience. Kept it pretty much to the middle not too close to the buoys. Was sunk a couple of times by some swimmers, mostly be those who can't swim straight & they tend to swim right over top of you or across you. My swim felt calm, relaxed and smooth albeit slow. Wasn't going to change a thing, it felt right. Was concerned if I went faster that I might cramp up my foot. At one point I looked up to my right & way amazed that I saw the bluff walls that I saw on the shore. Thought holy shit, I'm near the half way point! Finish the rest of the swim without incident.

Smoke a joint?
Transition 1
  • 05m 56s
Comments:

Really screwed up in transition. I took my bag of gear & immediately took it to my bike. Apparently this is wrong, you're suppose to get change in the change tent. I sucked back another Powerbar Recovery drink before the ride. Struggle with the socks on, but everything else was fine.

What would you do differently?:

Get change in the tent.
Bike
  • 6h 00m 6s
  • 180.25 kms
  • 30.03 km/hr
Comments:

Bike was good, just wanted to end the course with at least 30kmh pace. The first 60 km was fast until I had to use the washroom on Ritcher's pass. That break cost me 9 minutes or so. So I knew I had to make up some time because of that. Passed plenty of people going up the hills and the heavier folks passed me on the downhills. It was a fun ride overall & no complaints...body felt totally comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...sometimes you have to do business.
Transition 2
  • 10m 18s
Comments:

Sure was nice not having to worry about racking your bike! This time I did the transition properly & changed in the change tent. Only changed my shirt, put on band aids for my toes and fresh socks. Saw a bag of chips & decided "yeah...i want those!" Stumbled through transition with my bag of chips, went to the outhouse but it was padlocked WTF? So I had to go to the back of the transition.
Run
  • 4h 26m 5s
  • 42.16 kms
  • 06m 19s  min/km
Comments:

Really didn't want to run, that's for sure, but I did for the most part. The plan was simple, walk through every aid station & up any major hills. It worked. Never ran a marathon before so this was new uncharted territory. I ate everything the course had to offer. Loved the grapes, they were awesome! Chicken soup broth...yep tried that too & don't forget the coke.

Congrats Ironman.

IM is all about overcoming obstacles and being mentally tough. You had more than your share getting to the starting line but still did well.

How did you like the course?
