Pre-race routine:

Should have gotten out of bed a little earlier to eat breakfast and drink. I still got some oatmeal down, but it was a little too fresh in the stomach for my liking.

Arrived a little later than I wanted, then realized I had the wrong building for registration so I walked a few extra blocks to get to the right place.
Event warmup:

Registered, then did a little stretching, a little walking, and some quick sprints. Should have stretched a bit more, because I went off very tight in the legs.

Couldn't decide til the last minute to take the fleece or not. Finally decided against it, a wise choice.

RAN OUT OF GAS...BUT SNAGGED A PR!!

It's been a while since I felt this bad during a 5K. I set out to put a good time on the board, but by the first turn realized I was going to be dragging myself around the course. I felt like a torso with twin 100 pound weights dragging behind me. Legs were extremely heavy and tight. Just putting one foot in front of the other.

The hill at 2.5mi bit me bad. I managed to stay running up the hill, but had to stop to walk at the summit. My legs were getting heavier and there was no gas in the tank. About 20 seconds of walking and one of my training friends passed me and virtually dragged me back into running. Had an OK finish on a slight up-hill.

Imagine my surprise when I clocked in at 24:35. I was prepared for a 27:00+; that's how bad I felt. Bonus points for me, because 24:35 is a PR (personal record) by just 2 seconds. I guess my base conditioning was better than I thought. Sub-8 pace for a 5K; I'll take it. And I've left plenty of room for improvement too.
What would you do differently?:

Way more stretching; and a far better nutrition plan the day before the race. The Oreo diet just didn't do it for me this time. :)
Post race
Warm down:

The warm-down was a 4.2mi lap around Reeds Lake to round out my marathon training day. Ironically the lap, including both hills, felt pretty good. I was far more relaxed. Did my nerves get me for the race?

Event comments:

Little race, 283 finishers. No aid stations. Well organized, as Classic Race always is, but not much for refreshments.

Performance: Below average
Course: Nice little out-and-back course around part of Reeds Lake; a VERY familiar area for me for running. Medium sized rise and fall at about 0.6mi and again coming back at 2.5mi. There was a little loop at the outermost portion of the course to get the race turned-around. My goal was to not have the leaders pass me coming back while I was still going out. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Nice race, Matt !!  Setting a PR and it being SUB 8...CONGRATS!!  You truly are developing some wheels .  I wonder how fast you would've went if you hadn't walked... perish the thought!!  Sure am curious to know what your splits were!!  Maybe low 7's for the first mile??  Yikes!!

Until I replace my watch, no splits. And no clocks at the mile markers either. But I did hear a guy a few steps behind me clock the first mile at 7:49. Second and third, who knows??
