Skaneateles Labor Day Race Weekend
72F / 22C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 20m 26s
Overall Rank = 60/478
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 10/54
Pre-race routine:

Woke up about 4:50, had a good sized bowl of cereal and showered. Got my stuff together and waited for my ride to the race. It poured rain on us once we got to Skaneateles and I froze while getting my number, chip, etc. Got set up in transition - everything getting wet, of course, and boy did it feel good to get warm in my wetsuit.
Event warmup:

None to speak of except about a 20 yard swim.
Swim
  • 13m 19s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Decent, but not spectacular swim. Stayed crowded as we caught a large chunk of the wave that started previous to us - I was in the 3rd of 4 waves. Even caught a few from the first wave. Saw someone waving in trouble from the previous wave and directed someone on a board over to her. Rounded the second buoy kind of wide. Sighted OK. No drafting to speak of.
What would you do differently?:

Still looking for the right swimmer to draft off of.
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Still a rough one for me. More trouble getting out of wetsuit than last race, and I had BodyGlide on my wrists/ankles. Had sunglasses on, but they were too fogged and wet, so I turned them around back, but I don't think that slowed me much. I'm not even sure what "helmet on, suit off at same time" means! I take my suit off and then put my helmet on. How can you do both at the same time?
What would you do differently?:

Practice T1 - I'd like to get under 1:30 consistently, and closer to 1 minute would be ideal.
Bike
  • 43m 56s
  • 14 miles
  • 19.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Wet, rolling ride. Again, road out of T1 is uphill, so tough to get going and not be in shoes. I did OK, but still this as the place for my times to improve most going into next season.
What would you do differently?:

Not much here.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Faster than T1 and not bad overall, but I don't do any of the things that I'm supposed to do getting off the bike. Racked OK, some fiddling with shoe laces, but an OK T2.
What would you do differently?:

Practice advanced T2 skills. Adjust shoe laces a bit better beforehand.
Run
  • 20m 19s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Crankin' on the run. No water stops. Felt a little queasy coming up the hill in the residential part, but that went away. I misjudged that last turn and thought I had one more to go, otherwise I would have finished a bit harder. I also backed down when the clock read 1:26 and I thought I had a slower race than last year - forgot to subtract the 6 minutes from the swim waves!
What would you do differently?:

Ensure I'm a bit more aware of the course, especially the run into the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, talked to friends, waited for George.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wet roads to some extent, but mostly the usual - train more!

Event comments:

Pre-race environment was a bit hectic this year, but the weather probably didn't help much. Swim waves seemed to have been staggered strangely, which contributed to a crowded swim and a crowded course in general - we got bunched up.

Congrats on a great race!  I raced too, and agree that the swim waves were strange and caused quite a bit of traffic on the bike course.  I was in the second wave and passed some in the first, but was also passed by some in the third on the swim.  I was then passed by quite a few people on the bike that I am assuming were in the third swim wave (in other words, they flew right by me!)
