Hey, Todd!

This might help--we covered how to train for a 5K during a swim chat. FWIW, you might want to drop in on this month's swim chat and ask how to modify that plan or do a 10K one ...

http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1444

I don't see anything in your logs, so I'm not sure if that means you're starting from scratch--in which case I probably wouldn't recommend doing a 10K swim next year unless it's quite late in the season, and that is your ONLY goal for the year.

If you have already been swimming quite a bit, let us know where you're at so we can advise you.

This year been a rather swim heavy year for me and saturday I am attempting my 2nd 5k swim race and first time without a wetsuit. I figure it will give me an idea and qualifications for swimming later if I need it.

10k swim would be the main focus for my racing next year since looks like the IM is out. I will still do a HIM or 2 though.

Thanks I will look into the swim training.

Also check out the USMS website. I am also planning on doing my first 10k swim next Summer and will be cranking up the swim volume too.

If I find anything interesting, I will post it here for you and anyone else who is interested

Unless your goal is primarily just to finish, I think the most important thing to do is join a good masters program. You're going to need to put in some significant yards, and that much swim training is likely to get boring if you're training alone.

For some point of reference, I swim with a group of people that come from swimming backgrounds (HS swimmers at the least, an Olympian at the other extreme). A bunch of them do a 5-mile open-water race each year. For most of them, swimming about 3000 yard workouts 3x a week is enough to do a respectable job.

Well I was a member of 2 master swim classes this year. . I do agree it works well for the most part to have others to swim with. Swimming on your own can be tought but the swimp3 helps that also.

Sad news if I found a 10k swim closer to home which I do not seem to need to show proof that I can swim 10k. I guess its since 3, 2 mile loops I beleive you can stop and get some to drink while you are racing.

I am figuring 2 - 3 work outs a week with the MS and 1 of a long swim per week. this way 2 - 3 days a week I can work on form, speed, and drills and 1 day where I can work on really far distance.

You can find some good resources here

 http://forums.usms.org/forumdisplay.php?f=4

Make sure you check in on the open water forum. There are some helpful folks there.

Frankly if you can swim 5K you can swim 10K. Now racing 10K is another thing.

I've done 3 10k swims.  I had a coach for two of them.

I can't recommend a "plan", but I know the two years I did the best I had several long swims.  The first year I swam at least 4-5 times above the 6k distance--a couple of 6k's, a 7.5k, and a 10k workout.  This PAST year when I set my PR my longest swim was 7.5k but I did a WHOLE TON of workouts at race pace...4x400, 6x600, 4x500, 6x300, etc. etc. all at "race pace" with only 10" RI.  It worked really well.  The middle year I had no coach and never swam over 5 or 6k at a shot (and only one or two times at that) and I had a really really hard time finishing.

Just my two cents.  Fire away with questions....

This book is a perfect resource:
http://www.amazon.com/Open-Water-Swimming-Penny-Dean/dp/0880117044/...

It has tips and techniques for open water races of all distances, and even has a sample program to help you train for a 10K swim (and any other swim race you want to do, from 1/2 a mile to 20+ miles).

Good luck on your training

I agree. I have a copy and it has been invaluable. Worth every cent and more.

Dang it people... don't you know that I UADD (ultra ADD).... Oh look something shiny...oh wait, that looks like fun. Now I have something else I need to look in to. Just how many "dark sides" are there that you can get pulled over to?

Well I was told no on IM and many people said yes to this so this is my IM for next year. Lets trade. You can swim and I will do the IM.
