Another good reason to have a motorcycle: back-up vehicle for when your commuter dies. My Jeep Cherokee just ate it's AC clutch and snapped the serpentine belt. Had to tow it home last night behind my hubby's '57 Chevy. Since we have to get the parts, this morning I hopped on the MZ and rode in. My Jeep will be down a few days, so at least I can get around on the motorcycle until it's fixed.

Get one of these.

DUDE. I've been drooling over the Triumphs for years, and I think I have found a new fantasy. Those things are GORGEOUS. I don't care if it never works right (who trusts British mechanical engineering?), I would ride that thing around and show it off to EVERYBODY. The military one is the best one of the bunch.
Like others have said, buy used. There are plenty of Triumphs around used. However do not skimp on gear, check out www.newenough.com for good deals on gear. Here is my Triumph.

Nice looking bike! Nice looking KTM supermoto bike, too.... annnnnd... a KLX?

The KTM 525 is my race bike and the KLX110 is my sons race bike (supermoto) although it still has the dirt wheels on in that pic.

Here is the klx110 with my son racing it.

(sorry for the hijack).

Motorcycle are suicide machines.  Only fools with death wishes would ride one....

Indeed, that was a good guess.

Ouch. I think the clutch goes out of the AC compressor in every Jeep Cherokee. Mine did on my 93 and my 98. I'm not going to tell you how much they cost........

Yeah, mine's a 2000 and has 138K miles on it. It's one of those things that just wears out. My husband will be doing the work, so we figure parts and tools (vac pump) will be way cheaper than a shop doing it all.

I commute 50 miles a day on my motorcycle.

In addition to wearing full gear, two things that I found invaluable are headlight and tail light modulators.

I have twin headlamps so it's really noticeable and i have a LED light bar underneath my license plate in the rear that modulates when braking.

http://www.kisantech.com

I use the headlight modulators when I'm in the HOV lane (and traffic is slow/stopped in the next lane) and when I'm lane sharing.

Cagers actually make room for me as I'm coming up from behind when I'm lane sharing.

"Timely" thread...

I just this morning registered my wife for a local MSF course in early December (hoping it doesn't get canceled). I'll be taking it a little later.

For gear: www.newenough.com -- go there, great deals. I just yesterday bought my wife the HJC Sy-Max II helmet in metalic silver for $224. And I got some other close-out gear really cheap as well. Jacket, pants, gloves... She doesn't know I bought the gear... SHHH! Don't say anything.

And I've read a few good books as well -- a couple by Pat Hahn that I highly recommend, and "The Complete Idiots Guide to Motorcycles".

And the three attitudes:

(1) You are responsible for everything that happens on the road.
(2) Assume every one else on the road is TRYING to kill you.
(3) Roads are designed to put you down.

Note there isn't anything there about MOTORCYCLES being dangerous. Like everything, it's how they're used and the respect they're given.
