People are waiting for Ironman Wisconsin to see if they can get into that, if they are not able to sign up online or when it sells out in 10 minutes, then I bet people come over to IM Kentucky and sign up and it will fill up pretty quick after that. Honestly, I am not sure why it has not filled up yet. Even IM CDA filled up in 5 days and although I have done that race twice and it is an awesome race and venue, it does require long rides in 30 degree weather and runs on snow/ice in getting ready for it in Jan/Feb. Where IM Kentucky is an end of the summer race, so more training can be done in warmer weather. Maybe it is the heat and humidity that keeps people from signing up. ???? If I had to choose between CDA and KY, I'd definitely pick CDA. Where I live, training in winter isn't bad, and I've been to KY during the summer and don't know how much I would enjoy racing in that humidity. I guess it would be ok if you're used to it, but I have been spoiled by a lifetime of mild weather here in CA. Yes, for some it is easier to do than others. Although, nothing is guaranteed on any race day at any location. It has been 95 degrees in CDA and one year in Wisconsin it was 56 and raining. That is what is great about Ironman, you take whatever it dishes out. |

Extreme Veteran 427 St. Louis, MO | Subject: RE: IMKY 2009 sold out already The closing of IMMoo will push the numbers at IMKY quickly over the next couple of days...... The people I talk to that are not signing up give me essentially 2 answers: 1) It's going to be too hot, humid, etc......exactly why I'm doing the race....I get to train and race in the same general climate! 2) "You have to swim without a wetsuit in the Ohio River?" Many folks see this river as the typical rushing river like the Mississippi or Missouri or the Wabash or just about any other large Midwest River.....but because of the location and the navigational needs in that area, the "pool" around Louisville is fairly consistent and stable.....last year the water was cleaner than almost every lake I've swum in with the exception of Lake CdA...this year I understand since the flow rates were lower that the clarity was more like the lakes around here than the river of '07.....
Oh well as I say, it's IM ....It is what it is and you do it for 140.6 then you're done!

This was my thinking last year when I signed up. While I felt it more on race day than on the practice swims... it was nothing like I thought it would be. I don't know if I was thinking about "rapids" or what... I just know it wasn't as bad as I thought. One morning, the river was so calm it looked like glass... I actually enjoyed it. Although I didn't drink as much of it as some did. Kenny |

My wife was pregnant and I had a young daughter running around the house. For the majority of the time I tried to get workouts in at lunch, before everyone got up, and / or after everyone went to bed. It was hard at times and didn't get much sleep most of the time. A major downside was a decision that we made early on. They would not be there to watch my first IM. Yah.. that sucked, but there is no way I wanted her running around in Louisville, in the heat / humidity, all day with a 2.5 year old and a 6 month old. It would have been too hard on all involved. My kids are a handful in a "normal" situation.. haha Good luck with your conversation... See you in Kentucky next year. KennyMy butt is really starting to hurt from sitting the the fence for so long. Watching Moo today and debating what to do I think tonight I will chat with the wife and try to come up with a plan. So how does one have this chat with a 5 month pregnant wife and a two year old running around. "So babe, I know I am going to Tempe in 11 weeks for IM but I need to make a descion for next year NOW. Where would you like to go next year and spend a day catering to a 3 yr old and infant?" Flowers my friends, flowers. A dozen yellow roses, a witty card as if it was from your 2yr old son saying how it would be great for daddy and the family. Thats all it took and I got the privledge to give WTC $525 See everyone in Kentucky |

Regular 357 | Subject: RE: IMKY 2009 sold out already I'm currently one of the fence sitters (and yes I was disappointed when i read the title, lol). I'm deciding between IMKY and the full Vineman. Both are at the time of year i want (end of summer), and well thought of. I was wondering if anybody had done both and could give me their impressions? or (yes i know i'm touching the third rail here) if m-Dot races like IMKY are really worth the extra $? |

I sat on the fence only a little while then fell over into the hawg pen with the other 36 IMKY BT people. I've not done any IM races besides IMKY but I have done IMKY twice now and it is a frist-class race and worth every penny! I've done several big marathons and nothing even comes anywhere close to IMKY in terms of course support and organization. If supply and demand is any idication of customer satisfaction, the fact that virtually all M-dot races sell out - often in a matter of hours - I'd say that is a pretty good endorsement. ~Mike |
