Age Group Rank = 19/85
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30 and loaded my and my wife's bikes. Plopped the kid in his PJ's in the back seat and loaded Grandma, too. Drove 45 min. to race start. Unloaded bikes and let Grandma and Ryan park car. Cool!

This was a training race for me, so made sure my wife was fully situated. She did the Sprint. It was her 2nd tri.
Event warmup:

Swim for 8-9 minutes
Swim
  • 31m 15s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went out a little light compared to normal, as I've felt I've been going out too hard. It made a difference. I was more comfortable in the first 1/3 of the leg and passed a bunch of people late. I drafted better than normal, for me.

Bike

Comments:

Good bike leg considering the hills
Transition 2
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

End of leg came up on me too quickly to get out of shoes, so I dismounted with shoes on and had to take them off in T2. Never had to do that before. Oh well, probably only 10-12 sec.
What would you do differently?:

Get out of shoes as I approach T2.
Run
  • 48m 4s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

The hill took its toll, especially the 2nd lap.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a snack and found Ryan and Grandma and watched Jackie's finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not tapering.

Event comments:

I was a bit disappointed with this race. Even without a taper, I expected to go 2:30. I lost time in the swim, T2 and a little in the run. I was happy with my bike leg.

Great job without the taper. I was wondering what your strategy for the race was, given the long bike ride on Saturday. Looks like it was a great training day for you. Nice job on the swim-drafting. I can't quite seem to get the hang of that. Also looks like the knee thing has subsided a bit. I hope that stays away for good. Must have been very strange to bike through a closed city course in a city as big as LA. Great job!

Scott, congrats on the race. That's cool that you and your wife did the same one. I did hear that the bike course was hillier this year than in years past!

GOOD JOB!

Congrats on the finish, sorry it wasn't what you were hoping for. You knocked out a respectable bike and run especially with that hill.

You were likely one of the many fast guys on the bike blowing past me after I got out of transition and on Venice (by the wat ... you guys rock).

How did your wife do? Did she enjoy the sprint?

I would be very happy with the run leg, from what I read you had a massive? hill to climb at least twice.
