Pre-race routine:

Figured Id write this while I am still happy- rather then wait a few days when Ill be telling myself I should have done everything better.
I went to Madison Friday morning with DJdavey- thanks for the ride dude :)- we went to breakfast at the terrace. I was invited via Community Fund. I had been feeling like crap the past few days- fluish stuff, very tired achy and just not into it. Decided to try out the swim- see if it made me feel any better to actually DO something. It didnt- but thanks mndiver for swimming with my slowness. We did the registration and went to the hotel to nap. I decided at this point I really didnt feel good and wasnt going to the Athletes dinner or meeting. I was kind of disssapointed that I was missing everything and not having fun at this event I have been loooking forward to forever and was worried about how it would affect my race. (Thanks 1stTimetri and djdavey for listening to me whine and cry- sorry:)
Saturday I felt alittle better- the family came up and I checked everything in. Decided I better start to pile some food in too.
Woke up Sunday and felt OK- I had a headache but I did actually feel like I could do it:) Had some breafast and daves FIL drove us to the Terrace. On the way I was being the mom I am and asking if he had everything...."yes Tam- I have everything"...."Dave - you have your chip?" "Damn- nope- turn around" seriously??? Yeesh- so we turn around. This is the point I begin to get really nervous. I have been fairly calm up until now. But Im kinda freaked.

Event warmup:

Warm up for an IM- heck no.
Swim
  • 1h 22m 20s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well walked down the terrace and kind of stayed in the back. The swim is really my weakness and I just wanted to get out of the water. I really didnt even want to get into the water. Looked behind me and Josh (mutri) and dave were there. I think we were almost the last ones in the water- the clock said 6:56 when we got in. We started kind toweards the outside. It was probaly a good idea- because I had a pretty easy time getting started. I was thinking- hey this isnt so bad. Slowly made my way to the inside, made the first turn and got sucked into the eye of the storm. I did pretty well though. I didnt freak out, just find my space and go. After the first lap I found myself on the outside again.
When I finally got to turn in I could hear thena nnouncing that the people coming in were at 1:19...so that made me happy cuz I knew Id be in in the 1:20s :)
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn how to swimn staight. Of course being faster would help too.
Over all was hoping for 1:20, guessing for 1:30...1:22 was fine with me:)

Comments:

Wetsuit strippers were awesome. Was a long but fun run up the helix. Grabbed my bag changed, peed and was off. 8 minutes isnt too bad for WI T1.
Was damn glad to be getting on the bike!
What would you do differently?:

maybe wear the shirt I was biking in under my wetsuit. I just didnt know what the weather was going to be and didnt know what I was going to wear.
Bike
  • 6h 15m 26s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.90 mile/hr
Comments:

I LOVED the bike. I had a blast out there. Being a not so good swimmer I got to pass a lot of people... I came out of the swim in like 1400 place and was 800 something of the bike. The hills were great with all those people out there.... 100 times easier. I saw Bob out at bitch hill- high fived him... the support out there is awesome. On the second big downhill I had to hit the ditch... guess I didnt rememebr having to brake for that one... oops.. was kinda funny though. Saw lots of flats out there... was praying I wouldnt get one.
Stopped at SN to get three more bottles of infitinte and my combos- bathroom was full so I pulled up to the next corn field and went. Some yelled asking if I was looking for dead bodies:)
The wind picked up a lot for loop 2- it really sucked going out- that highway part is so long and boring and the headwind made it the worst part of the bike. This one guys says to me "Tammy- youre a goat!" I was like- WTF??... "huh?" He says- "yeah you climb those hills like a goat"- lol...so thats a compliment?? :)
In Crossplanins I got stung by a bee right in the chest- OUCH|!!! Yeesh I thought one of the pirates stabbed me;)
I saw mndiver- he wasnt feeling well :( then I sawjhouse- finally- on his WAY COOL bike... he wasnt feeling well either- he said he puked few miles back. I felt bad for those guys :( (probaly the only way I can beat them though ;)
I finally saw my family on the way back into Verona- they didnt even see me - I almost feel off my bike getting their attention.
Looked at my watch and figured with the tailwind on the way in I could maybe hit 6:15 bike split.... I felt great so I took it in ata nice pace- couldnt believe all the people I was still passing :) YEAH ME! Was an awesome site to see the helix again. I said to the guy riding next to me that I thought the fun part was probaly over.
This was for sure the easiest time I have had on that course this year.
I had 5 bottles of infinite, 2 banana halves, Cliff bar, and a few combos, 2 aerobottles of water. I probaly didnt drink quite enough at the end because I really had to pee and wasnt stopping again until T2.

What would you do differently?:

I was really happy with this. My biking hasnt been as fast as I would have liked it to be this year- so almost 18 mph was right on for me. I think I probaly needed more shorter faster stuff in training.
Maybe a little more infinite- I really should have had at least half of my last bottle

Transition 2
  • 05m 14s
Comments:

Good T2. Changed my shorts, grabbed my garmin (I dont know why- I barely looked at it). My volunteer tied my shoes for me...sweet:) Off I went. Saw my family and a bunch of other people coming out- I was feeling great and smiling a lot :)
I saw a bunch of people laying around the terrace stretching and not looking so good. Was glad it wasnt me.
What would you do differently?:

nothing- not bother with the garmin?
Run
  • 4h 37m 44s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

Well I started out feeling good. The pro women were starting lap 2 as I was on lap one (ugh) very cool though. Got to about mile 2.5 and wanted to stop already. I just couldnt find my happy run place. Ran slower- didnt work, ran faste-r didnt work, walked- ddint work. I just struggled thru. I told everyone I saw out there that never ever again was I doing this. I stopped by my family after the turn around, I think I was at like 2:10 (?)... said it sucked- I felt like crap and didnt even want to finish. My husband says you have almost 3 hours to do the 2cnd loop and youll still be under 13 hours. So away I ran and I actually strted to feel better. I saw Birkie out there- I walked with him for a minute to see why the hell he wasnt running ( I think I may have to teach him a thing or two about injuries and nutrition ;)) I let him check out my legs and I was off running again- feeling a little better. I was hoping Id get my groove sometime during the run. I only walked a few aid stations and the big ass hill. I got to mile 18 and thought- YAH- only 6 more miles.... then I got to mile 20 and said WTF... 6 more frikin miles. Delerious I guess:) I took in a lot at the aid stations whatever I could get my hands on. I brought tums on the run too... good idea- I reccomend them to anyone, wish I would have had them on the bike already. So at mile 20 I figured if Imake it in an hour I could go about 12:30- So I ran and stopped just to grab what I needed. I was a chic on amission:) I wasnt moving very fast...maybe 9:45s and my calves were so tight- but I kept on. I met so many awesome, awesome people out there. Triathletes are the best.
As I got closer- like mile out and going uphill down sate street with all the people I pushed alittle harder- I didnt have much but wanted to break 12:30. Bob cam and ran with me for a minute, gave me a little boost- told me I did great and hed meet me at the finish. I booked it in so fats he didnt see me finish and he knew I was coming- he saw my family getting hot dogs and they missed me finishing too- Oh well. I tell you that smile I had after turning the last corner was huge- I could wipe it off if I tried. I trained hard and Ideserved this- I was an Ironman. It was a sweet finish:)
My fanatstic catchers- Phil and Peggy got me blanket and medal and shirt and asked how I felt. I said not very good and I just wanted to sit, They massaged my calves- how sweet was that?- I was feeling really dizzy and kind of seeing spots so they dragged me to the med tent.
They were awesome in there- made me drink some thing. weighed me - I only lost 3 pounds ( pretty good I say:)) they got my bags for me too. Afetr I while I felt Ok- so went to get my finisher photo and some food.

What would you do differently?:

I dont know what was wrong at first.. does it really take 13 miles to get warmed up??
Was pretty happy with this- I figured it would take me like 5 hours so 4:37 was all good.
Post race
Warm down:

Ugh when I stood up after the med tent I almost couldnt walk- OUCH. My mom told me I made her cry like 4 times that day...awwww. She said my dad called and was proud of me and going to go brag to his friends.... which was awesome because he pretty much thinks I belong in the looney bin (which I might). Walked to the car though- went home iced the legs, ate some more and went to bed. I couldnt even sleep- I just kept thinking about my amazing day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well.. I was sick most of the week- not sure if it affected me or not. I put the time in I trained pretty hard- I think I got what I deserved

Event comments:

Id do this race again in a heartbeat. It was everything I had hoped and more. The athletes are the nicest, the volunteers are great, the crowd support is amazing.
My husband told me this morning that my mom said if I qualified for Kona she was paying for the whole family to go...damn- if I would have known that I sure could have gone A LOT faster ;)!!
Next time sub 12 :)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

I was worried about you after you and Brian went for a swim on Friday and you were looking a little (OK, a LOT) green. I was surprised and impressed to see you smoke 13 hours with time to spare.

Oh, and be nice about the 1:2X swim time comments, I was smiling ear-to-ear when I got out of the water in 1:21!!!!!

Great job Tammy.  Like I told you, I predicted 12:30 in the interview Scoobysdad did with me on Saturday for his documentary. Pretty darn close.  The minute you walked with me was one of the highlights of the day - it was pretty lonely walking and watching everyone pass me.  Thanks for that.  Congratulations IRONMAN.

Awesome race, Tammy!  That is a great time.  Top 20% in your AG, that is phenominal.  When I saw you on the run, you looked like you were having a great time and looked very relaxed.

Enjoy some time off!
