Subject: M-Dot tat only for full Ironman?
Is it considered bad form to use the M-Dot tat for completing a 70.3(especially if it's an 'official' Ironman 70.3 race)? If it is considered bad form, do people do some variation of the M-Dot for 70.3?

I'm new to tris and even I know this is a religious, 9mm Vs .45 or Coke Vs Pepsi question.

What I've come away thinking, after reading the 100 page threads on this, is do what you want and it's your skin.
The two most common I've read about are putting 70.3 into the tattoo somewhere and shading the M so it's only half coloured. Then leave it as is or fill the rest in when completing a full IM.

I just completed my first 70.3 and for me that is a huge achievement.  I didn't ask anyone if it would be OK to do the 70.3 and I won't be asking anyone if it's OK to get an mdot tattoo to commemorate the milestone - I will however have a 70.3 within the mdot.

Just run a full Ironman and then you won't have to worry about it.

Personally, I wouldn't get the tat unless I qualified for and finished Kona.  But then again, this is coming from a jack@$$ who has yet to even run his first tri.

"9mm Vs .45"

Wow, as if there is any argument there . . . I guess maybe among those with zero understanding of ballistics?  That's along the same lines as the age-old "Huffy vs. Cervelo" debate.

Sorry of the high jack. I really don't want to start an argument for this. Coming from one who's only experience is allot of friends who are ex-military (including sniper), police, and shoot champions (and my own shopping experience) there is an argument there. I have heard my friends argue about this. Here's an example of one augment that was posed to me when I was trying to decided which weapon to buy... what is more important - stopping power (.45) or the ability to shoot off more shots with more accuracy because of less weight and less kick (i.e. wrist will not get tired as quickly)... keeping in mind that with the right ammunition you can significantly increase the stopping power of a 9 mm

BTW:
I just signed up for my first IM. Will get a tattoo, but I don't know about the M-Dot. I want to come up with something more personal but something that will still get the point across.

Personally, I love the tattoo idea. If you want you could do a number of different things.

1. M-dot with 70.3 under it (or in it)
2. M-dot out line, and leave the center empty so when you do complete the full IM you can fill it in.
3. Just the 70.3
etc., etc......

I say go all ironical on the world and get the face of Bea Arthur tattooed on your calf.  She turned 70.3 in her final season of the Golden Girls...just sayin...

I guess I'm a purist and a hypocrite.  I ordered a cycling jersey because it was VERY cheap.  It said it was Ironman brand, but I did not think anything of it, as it looked normal on the website.  I got it in the mail, and it's got the official Ironman logo in LARGE letters across the back (did not see that on site.  I won't even wear it on a ride outside, as I feel like I'm cheating the name somehow.  There again, I've got tribal tattoos without belonging to a tribe and peace sign tattoo without ever joining a rally, so who's to say?

What race are you doing? Perhaps there's a race-specific logo you could use for your tat...

For me I waited until i did the full ironman, I did 3 halfs before the Ironman and felt none were worthy of the tat.  I am looking at doing my second Ironman next year, for that I will add on to it.

Another thought on this, with WTC being sold, i predict that more 70.3 races will be added, that said, there will be tons more people achieving that feat.  That said, IMO a tattoo for the 70.3 becomes less special.

It's a personal choice and one that the "bearer" of the tat. has to explain to others if someone asks about it.

Really, who cares, it is their body.  If they want to put a trademarked logo on it, have at it!

I agree with Daremo.  When it comes down to it, the Mdot is a brand logo.  They even had it on Degree deororant for awhile, right?  Generally, when I see the tattoo, I assume the person has completed the full distance, but I would not care if it turns out that they didn't.  Just my opinion.

PUH-LEASE can we drop the tattoo topic in favor of the 9mm vs. .45 debate ... that one actually has some substance in it.

Here's the triathlon twist to the debate:

Personally, I would want to be able to squeeze off more shots.  That means I would not have to train as much to strengthen my wrist and/or do the work required to be more accurate.

Anyone else is an elitist and should post elsewhere.

If there is any concern as to whether something is in "bad form", chances are it is.  But ultimately, it is up to the indivuals perception entirely.

I was going to get a M-Dot after my HIM... but didn't get around to it because I had to swim and what not.

I think it's fine to get a M-Dot for a 70.3... IF that tattoo denotes that it was a 70.3.

Just getting a M-Dot for a 70.3... well if people (who do tri's!) see it, like when you are swimming, they will think you did a full IM. It's just the perception.

Sure, it's just for you, but it's almost like false representation if someone does see it. They will automatically ask, "OH! What Ironman did you do?"... thinking the full distance.

So if the M-Dot shows 70.3 on it, then it's cool. Just a plain M-Dot for a 70.3.... not so cool. But that's just me.

I think you should do something with a Longhorn that has 70.3 on/near it. I think the numbers are just as cool and a very nice reminder of what you did.

In the end, do whatever makes you happy sweetie. It's not like you will put it anywhere it can be seen on a daily basis.

BTW folks, I'm his girlfriend.

The 9mm is like the compact crank of the gun world.

I probably won't get one, even when I finish my Ironman this fall...

I don't care if people know if I did one or not, or ask me about it.  The important people in my life will know.  And I don't need ink to remind myself that I did one - I hope to remember that small fact without a reminder.

I'm neutral on the 9mm vs 45.  I like both...  I shot someone's Desert Eagle 44 mag.  That was a violent experience, and I was not a big fan....
