MISSOULA, Mont. — A Missoula middle school teacher suffered some bruising and a big scratch on his back after he struck a bear while riding his bicycle to school.

Jim Litz says he was traveling about 25 mph Monday morning when he came upon a rise and spotted a black bear about 10 feet in front of him. He didn't have time to stop and T-boned the bruin.

He tumbled over the handlebars, his helmet hit the bear's back and the two went cartwheeling down the road.

The bear rolled over Litz's head, cracking his helmet, and scratched his back before scampering up a hill above the road.

Litz's wife drove by shortly after the crash and took her husband to the hospital. He hoped to be able to return to teaching science at Target Range Middle School on Friday.

Oh my gosh!!  Last Spring, I was riding in Harriman State Park with BT member Courage (Eric) and he t-boned a deer right in front of me doing 30+ mph!  He too cracked his helmet -- which he said without-a-doubt saved his life, and he was out of commision for a month.

I worry about that every time I ride outside.  I've had close encounters but never a "pucker" moment yet.

Apparantly this happens more often than you might think.

One of the guys who rides regularly in the group that I ride with hit a Black Bear earlier this summer here in Washington.  As I understand the story the bear was coming across the road, he was doing in excess of 30mph and T-boned it also (bear left the scene and don't know if it was ok or not). but he ended up with a few stiches, scratches on the bike and was out for a while (off the bike).

There is just so much to look out for when on a bike (road conditions, gravel, potholes, cars, pedestrians, wildlife, etc)

By us you are more likely to hit a cow. Open range. Fortunately since I am the only person who rides a bike around here the cows are still scared of me. But ya, if I am coming down a hill and there is a cow, with her baby, in the way it can get interesting. They don't move out of the way of cars either, you have to drive around them.

Ditched my MTB on the Cache Creek Trail near Jackson, WY due to a Moose stepping out into the trail.  It was early May and the snow was still clearing.  Frickin' wildlife everywhere during the spring thaw.

The only thing here we have to worry about are wild goats and wild pigs and the occasional road construction cone. Well, and then there are all the feral cats and mongoose.

You get absolutely zero cool point for hitting a cow. A bear, yes, a deer even gives fewer but still some. A cow, not even one.

Do you get any points for hitting a rattle snake? In the spring they come out onto the middle of the road to warm up and then when they feel the bike coming they slither toward the side of the road you are riding on (never away from you). You can hit one and have it reflexively wrap up into your spokes or around your foot and such after the first bump and before the 2nd tire.

I almost hit a moose once when I was mountain biking in Sweden. Luckily, I missed it's rear end by inches because it was huge and moving fast.

Target Range Middle School???? Wow...

Glad I wasn't the only one tp notice that.

I've been inches away from smacking a deer, I was tucked down all aero like on my mountain bike doing 40+ down a steep hill on the road at night in blinding snow. It's a long story as to how I found myself there, but in regards to the deer I didn't even have time to reach for the brakes or try to turn. It was either hit or miss. Luckily I missed. Scared my riding buddy behind me far more then it scared me. I think it was a buck as well.

No joke - this was one of my best friend's Dad!  She emailed me after it happened, and I assumed she was totally joking.  It's posted over in CoJ too, which is where I read the news story.  I immediately wrote her and apologized for not believing her.  Although, earlier this spring, her and I were biking together up in the hills of the Columbia Gorge and came within about 20 feet of 2 elk.  I guess close encounters with wildlife while riding runs in the Litz family.  :-)

I just missed hitting a goose. Scared the crap out it...but that's not saying much for a goose.

Actually would like to hit a few bars on my next ride.

Isn't that a bull, not a cow?  I'm thinking a bull would score some pts.

Near me the worst we usually have to deal with are the kamikaze squirrels. I have seen deer on the edge of the road and worried that they might step out at the wrong time.
