Just wondering about the SCT.  I have never ridden on it and remeber something about a murder some time ago...How safe is it?  Also what type of elevation is the ride.

I am looking at doing a 6 Hour ride on Saturday around 100 miles

When I've ridden there, there are tons of people.

Cyclist, runners, walkers - everybody. I feel very safe there.

You will see the memorial to Jennifer Ewing around mile 23, I believe. I forget the exact spot. Make sure you pay your respects on the way by. I've done multiple 75, 90, and 100 mile rides on the SCT. You will be perfectly safe. Enjoy. I'll be out there Sunday riding for 7 hours myself...

Unfortunately, bad things happen lots of places.  Yes, there was a murder on the SCT a few years back.

With that said, I ride the trail about once a month, have not had a problem there and have never felt unsafe.  I do usually ride with other people, though.  I often see police officers on patrol when I'm there.  Not sure where you're planning to ride from/to but if you start at Mavell or Floyd it will be more populated and may feel safer because of that (the problem with that for me, personally, is that I don't like jockeying around all the people).  The further out you go, the more remote it becomes.

The SCT is mostly flat and false flat terrain.  Once you get past Rockmart there are some rollers and on the newer part of the trail, some additional hills.

The SCT is a great resource and I'd encourage you to try it.

Silver Comet Trail is very safe, it's still hard for me to believe the reported crime from up there.  It would be perfect for a long ride like that, but the trail can get very congested for the first few miles, especially on the weekends.  Elevation is something like uhhhhh 0 feet haha.  Not sure on the exact elevation, but it feels pretty pancake flat.

BTW, on my 50 mile ride I did there last year, the Garmin said the elevation change was 400 feet. There are a few more inclines out near Rockmart, but for the most part, its a fairly low rolling ride. Rumor has it, there are a few hills past Rockmart where they put in the new trail, but I haven't been there yet myself. Enjoy!!!

Where would you all suggest getting on the trail to avoid the walking crowds.

My ride last weekend was 100 miles in Cleveland, Helen and Clarkesville (around 5000 feet of climbing)......The SCT sounds like a welcome change for my weary legs!

I also start at floyd.

She was an avid cyclist and rode the trail regularly.  There is a cross bearing her name and many cyclists place water bottles there.

I start at Hiram and ride west.  Crowding is never an issue.  However, if you are starting early, as I assume you are, starting from Floyd won't be bad going out but you will likely encounter more congestion coming back in.

Jennifer Ewing was killed about the time I started running. I knew nothing about the Silver Comet trial or her for that matter. She was a mother, a wife, and evidently, a ton of trouble packed into a smaller frame.

She often rode 50 and 75 mile rides on the Silver Comet trail. She was riding her bike one day when a scum bag ambushed her on the trail and kidnapped her. Jennifer was sexually assaulted and killed. Not before, however, she used her impressive fighting skills to severely damage her assailant. So bad, as a matter of fact, that the guy had to call the police for help. His bed was one mess of blood and gore, I heard. The killer dumped her body back along the trail where he took her.

In any case, there is a cross on the side of the trail around mile 23. I'm an old softee at heart, and I always bow my head and whisper prayer to Jennifer. Some peeps leave flowers, and the water bottles are piling up again.

Do what makes you happy

James, if you start early, ANY trailhead is good but Floyd is more attractive later in the day, and heading further west means less traffic.

Alright....so I am starting at Floyd Trailhead around 8:00 on Saturday (I live in Gainesville).  I will be heading west towards the Alabama State Line.  Note:  I will stop about 100 yards before the State Line, as I can't afford to have my IQ drop any further by venturing into Bama.  I will then head back to make it about 100 miles more or less.

Anyone care to join me?

wmckean - 2008-09-11 9:56 PM Dude! Did I mention I was born and raised in Alabama. I'm sure you meant Mississippi

Well obviously you were one of the smart ones and moved to Georgia!  I have some great friends in Alabama, and actually have a business in Montgomery.  Even when I know they are not listening I like to take a shot at them!

After the Clemson vs Bama game my phone was ringing off the hook.  What was the quote by Herbstreit on ESPN "Coach Saban is underpaid at 4 million per year".....Only in Alabama.

1. Did you hear that the Gov. Mansion burned last week.  Fire fighters were able to put it out until it had already burned to the trailer rails!

2.  Did you hear that they sold out of all the guns in Alabama last week.  Turns out the news caster reported that Russia had invaded Georgia and the rednecks were gettin ready!

I can go all night!

The Jennifer Ewing Memorial is just past mile marker 16.99, just over a set of railroad tracks.

The Silver Comet is a great place to train, save for it's lack of hills. It's not pancake flat, so don't expect that.. I may have an elevation profile. I'll look in a min. The difference is that the (false flats) inclines, and declines, are several miles long in places.  Anyway, the best advice for the SCT is just like any other bike ride. ALWAYS be aware. It's easy to get lulled into a false sense of safety being that there are no cars except at cross roads. Stay alert, slow down near small kids, they are very unpredictable. Also keep in mind that pedestrians always have the right away. As far as personal safety is concerned, it's probably on par with any park you would go to. It is patrolled in several spots by police in Golf Cart like transports. Paulding County has the highest presence I have seen.

Nice! I have been out to MM 25. I want to get out to 40 and back looks like some nice hills await!

The J. Ewing thing really creeped me out when it happend. I ride alone usually during the weekday( I am a student) and it gets really errie out there. But the more I ride the easier it gets. MM 17 is the Ewing memorial...still pisses me off every time I go by it. Anyone knows the staus of that A$$holes trial/sentencing/execution?
