I know these hills like the back of my hand from riding my motorpickles and my bikes through them. The question is this, are these touring type rides or are these serious gut wrenching pedal til you die events. There is no way I can do a century like a roadie, let alone a double, but if it is a mellow kinda thing, I wouldn't mind going for it.

Due to the amount of climbing, the time limit for this event is 19 hours, based on the earliest start time. The course closes at for everyone at 11:30pm. Be sure to start early if you need to!

Man their anti terrorist/slow-walker insurance must be sky high.

Just from the info they give it sounds like both:

"checkpoint opening and closing times are generally based on the "mass start" time and are calculated using an average speed range of 11 to 20 mph. If you are competing in the California Triple Crown Stage Race or the John Marino Competition, you must start at 6:00am."

That's a wide average, and this is a stage in several other multi-day tours. As long as you're not averaging less than 12 on those hills you should be fine. Now if you want to beat the competition crowd, that's another story...It looks like they're RAAM qualifiers and finishing in less than 12hrs. They might just be serious...
