Some of you know the story so I will make it brief. The suburban was broken into and lots of sports equipment was stolen including my oldest daughters first surfboard, my golf clubs, etc. She started learning to surf early this summer with me and fell in love with it. Our 5am sessions never got old. I honestly think she talked more to me out there then she does on the lift while snowboarding, or any other alone time in the car. Maybe its the dolphins and no waves, just opens her up. But anyway.

Two nights ago I replaced both our boards, she complained that her board was a boy board and stickr'd it all up with Roxy this and girls rule etc stickers. It was and old fun board I kept around "just in case" I had a boy. I have a garage full of things that I have said that. I was on the fence, let her pick her own board, or pick one for her. I bought one for her and had a custom sticker made up. Last night the surf was crap, so I told her that lets go for an OWS and run in the morning until the police find our boards. She was upset and ranted but was cool with it after some coaxing.

The gleam in her eyes at 5:30 in the morning when I pulled her "pink" very own board out of the back of the burby. Never seen water, wax, and stickers except for the "Lexi Rules" sticker that I truly believe made me the GREATEST FATHER EVER. She has not stopped talking about the sticker.

But the real excitement for me that I wanted to share as a father of only girls is, she is 12. She does not always catch waves as her paddle strength and old heavy board hindered her. WE would paddle for the same wave and I would catch it and she would wait for me and we would do it all over. She would just catch them on the inside. Today, for the first time, we caught the same wave. She was on the outside and actually yelled DAD, I looked back and immediately jumped over the top. I was so amp'd up you would have thought I just one a "9th" gold medal. All morning on her new very light board she was catching everything, snaking me in the process and I just never cared. She probably snaked 10 guys all morning, guys we have surfed 3 or 4 days a week with all summer, and nobody cared. She was killing it and I was just amp's that we found one more thing to enjoy together. Summer in the water, winters in the Snow. Girls are just not that bad.. Now getting her out of the water so she is was not late for school, well, we had a 12 year old moment and daddy had to give her the look. But, what a morning.

This was not brief, I am just excited! sorry!

That is so cool!!!  I wish I'd had a cool dad and a pink board when I was 12.  I had the old hand-me-down clunker.  And surfing before school...  extremely cool.  Way to go, dad!

Great stoy - thanks for sharing. As a father of two girls I have mentioned to my wife before that I can't remember why I wanted boys so badly.

speedball - 2008-09-12 11:35 AM Great stoy - thanks for sharing. As a father of two girls I have mentioned to my wife before that I can't remember why I wanted boys so badly.

As the father of two daughters also, I can answer that.  It's so you would only have to keep track of 1 peni$, not all of them.

But to the OP, it is truly awesome to have your kids interested in stuff that you do; wait till they are better than you.  That is really a cool feeling, to have inspired the passion.

So very true, she has not gotten into boys alot. she talks to a couple of them, all of whom I know. and we had the google search for adult content "lesbos" I had to contend with. Some boy on her bus called two girls that and she was curious. So I know what she has seen, and we have talked about it. I am not a super conservative father, she is so much like me that right now I know its not a matter of "if", its a matter of "when". and when is what why I am doing all I can to keep he so occupied she does not have time. my secret!

Well, your mistake here is that you are getting her into surfing.  Where all the cute surfer dudes are.  I got my older one into horseback riding.  Filled mostly with girls.

Sadly for me, daughter #2 is into music. Where all the cute rock star wanna-be's are.  Dang it.

That is so awesome. You know, my mom was thrilled when she had me (a girl) as her only child. Little did she know I would turn out to be such a tomboy and spent most of my youth dodging dance and piano so I could go fishing with dad and to all my sports stuff. Those are some really happy memories I have of him. You know, when dads are close to their girls it teaches them they can do whatever they want to in life. I owe my independence to the time and the security my dad gave me.....

t's true-- The dad/daughter relationship is pretty special.  I have great memories of being 12 and playing golf with my dad- not quite as cool as surfing, and definitely not before school, but he believed in me, thought I hung the moon, and I swear, a lot of my awkward adolescence was manageable knowing that my dad thought I was cool even if the boys did not, it was like I knew that one day the boys would be men like my dad and they'd understand me. (my life unfolded a tad differently, but my dad had a huge role in my self esteem, and in giving me confidence to try lots of things in HS, athletically and in other extra curriculars...)

He doesn;t say much- he is not really very touchy feely, but he is ALWAYS there, even now, when I need him.

I am kind of glad I had a son because I would be sad to think my daughter didn;t have a dad...
