Regular 95 | Subject: Post Ironman Exhaustion I am a 40 Year-old who did his first Ironman two weeks ago in Louisville, KY. I am finding that I am really tired during the day and want to fall asleep all of the time. I am eating okay, actually cheating a little but nothing major. I have only ran lightly a couple of times. Did not kill myself during the race but I was on the course 16 hours (Plantar Fasciitis). Is this normal? Should I still be this tired two weeks later? I did a five mile run today an I literally could have curled up and slept 8 hours under a tree. Thanks guys John |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Post Ironman Exhaustion I'm 46 and did my first IM at Lake Placid and I just started feeling better last week 6 weeks post IM. I wasn't fast either. My mind wanted me to train but my body just didn't have it in it. I didn't have have any zip in them. My longest run post IM is less than an hour, cycling came back for me quickier..did a IM relay bike 5 weeks post IMLP. You need to listen to what your body is saying and sounds like it wants more rest and easy stuff to allow you to recover. Read through the IM board and you'll see a few threads that talk about similar post IM stuff. Edited by KathyG 2008-09-14 2:58 PM |

You may not have felt like you over-exerted yourself, but you just put your body through a grueling day! That is normal, unless you're Pseudoyams who is just a genetically, fast phreak with is a naturally gifted and talented athlete (and I say that in the nicest way)! It's going to take time for your body to heal. It could take 2 weeks to 2 months or more. Enjoy the recovery. REST is JUST as important for your body. That's when your body is recovering, and it's when your body becomes stronger after working out. Congratulations, Ironman! |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Post Ironman Exhaustion Just finished IM KY as well, and finally got myself to swim, bike, and run this weekend. I set out with the goal to just keep a decent pace and enjoy the time. I feel much better having gotten thru this, especially knowing it was not for time, speed, etc. You did a tremendous accomplishment. Having done 5 IM's, I can speak from experience that your fatigue is normal. |

Extreme Veteran 563 Pekin, IL | Subject: RE: Post Ironman Exhaustion I did IMKY as well, and keep reminding myself that even though I walked alot more than I had planned, that I still covered 140.6 miles that day. Also, remember the months of long training leading up to race day. You have to recover from more than just race day. |

Champion 8540 the colony texas | Subject: RE: Post Ironman Exhaustion I'm more mentally tired than anything.. I purposely didn't work out the first week and the 2nd week just didnt' have the motivation. I have walked a lot every day though usually around 90 min each day with my dogs. It's weird since physically I feel pretty good |

Extreme Veteran 436 | Subject: RE: Post Ironman Exhaustion Right there with you guys, IMKY was my first and I am doing nothing but enjoying some free time. I hope to do my first workout tomorrow (possibly a run) but really like the off time and spending it with the family. Enjoy the time off, fall running is just around the corner. |

Veteran 248 Mooretown, Ontario Canada | Subject: RE: Post Ironman Exhaustion I'm in the same boat. Doing very little, and the couple of short runs I have done have been harder than I would have thought. I feel fine, but my legs tire quickly when I'm running. Enjoy the rest while you can. FishHog |

Thanks guys John John: If you are still experiencing that high a degree of fatigue 2 weeks later then I can just about guarantee you your adrenals are exhausted. Do yourself a favor and order a supplement called Adrenal Rebuilder by Future Formulations. They are quite hard to find so you will probably need to order them online. These are without a doubt the best supplements I have found for rebuilding the adrenals.

Elite 3498 Chicago | Subject: RE: Post Ironman Exhaustion I'm with you on this!. I'm 38 and after IMKY I got SUPER tired...like I-needed-a-nap-or-I-would-get-a-headache tired, about 5 days after the race. Same thing occur after IMWI too....Friday/Saturday like clockwork I was DEAD tired and need to take naps. I was still a little groggy yesterday (sunday), but today I feel about 85%-90% of my energy has come back. I have done absolutely NOTHING workout-wise since the 2nd IM. I was going to get on my bike and ride with my local cycling club on sunday morning...but it was raining and I didn't want to get wet (ha ha ha) so I just slept in. I figured if I didn't feel like riding my bike in the rain, I earned the right for that decision. I hope that this weekend the weather is nice so I could get on my bike with the club. This week I may run a little 30-40 min at a time. |

New user 45 | Subject: RE: Post Ironman Exhaustion I did IMKY and went on my first 30 min jog today. Not really tired, more of a calmness. Since IMKY I have done nothing but enjoy all of the fall Microbrews that are coming out. |

Regular 109 Florence, Arizona | Subject: RE: Post Ironman Exhaustion I'm quite exhausted a week after my IM too. I wake up feeling like I haven't slept a wink. Yet, I've tried a couple of workouts this week & it felt really great. Any stiffness I had from IM was gone in two days....but I think I've got more mental exhaustion than anything. Sitting at my desk trying to focus on accounting issues is almost impossible and I've been late both days since I've returned to work from the trip. oops. Trying to control my appetite is a little strange too since I'm not training anywhere near as hard. Some moments I'm ok with normal amounts of food, then the next I feel like I want to eat ten steaks. That's because of the exhaustion though, I'm thinking. |
