Sunny
Total Time = 3h 06m 57s
Overall Rank = 293/474
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 46/70
Pre-race routine:

Got to Lavonia on Friday afternoon and drove the run and bike courses after check in. Woke up a 6 am and ate a banana and powerbar. Got to the park and set everything up in transition
Event warmup:

Swam for about 5 minutes just to calm the nerves and get loosened up
Swim
  • 36m 45s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swimming is by far my weakest leg. This was my first olympic distance race and the swim was very hard. I could never get relaxed and was struggling most of the way. I have recently began a masters swimming class - so hopefully I can improve before next season.
What would you do differently?:

Relax
Transition 1
  • 02m 58s
Comments:

Good little run up the hill to the transition area. Was gassed from the swim - So I took a bit longer than I would have liked.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 16s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 19.27 mile/hr
Comments:

I put a new cassette on my bike this week and must have screwed something up. The bike kept slipping out of gear when I was grinding up thie hills.
Good ride overall for me. The traffic was a bit more than I like and slowed me down several times. saw a bad crash around mile 20 and slowed to make sure that an ambulance had been called.
What would you do differently?:

Push more on the hills and drink more. I only had my aero bottle on my bike and probably could have used more fluids.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Run
  • 1h 04m 21s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal was to be under 3 hours for the race. I had planned on running a 50 minute 10k - so I was in good shape after the bike. The first 1.5 miles I felt fine. I got REALLY hot coming up the hill towards mile 2. I had a hard time keeping cool from that point and struggled the rest of the way. I was not expecting the hills to zap my legs like they did.
What would you do differently?:

Run Faster!
Post race
Warm down:

Sat down and talked to a few people and drank lots of fluids. Got something to eat and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first Olympic race and my goal was to go under 3 hours. My training has not been very solid the last 2 month due to the birth of my son. My swim is still the weak point and I will be working on it over the winter months.

Event comments:

The race was great. My only complaint was the volume of cars on the road and the narrowness of some of the bike course. Great race though.

Nice race. It did get a little hot out there. I never had the car / congestion issue, but many did. Must have been a matter of luck / timing. What cassette did you go with, and do you think it was the right choice. I used my 11/23. Was fine with it, although spinning up some of those hills would have been a bit easier with a 25 on the top end. Nice job.

At the last minute I changed out my 11-23 for a 12-25. Next year I will keep the 11-23 on. I felt like I topped out on some of the flats with the 12-25.

Good job.  I thought the run course was kind of tough although I am not a runner by any means.  I have a compact crank (50/34) and and 12/27 cassette on my bike that I put on for riding the gaps, not a good setup for tris.  I can see a big difference when I do tris because after I hit about 32 mph on downhill grades, I may as well quit pedaling.  I should get a tri bike or either another bike with more applicable ratios.
