Downington, Pennsylvania
United States
Total Time = 1h 33m 17s
Overall Rank = 398/497
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 31/45
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5, cottage cheese, banana, bagel, coffee, on the road by 5:30.
Event warmup:

None really...was in a big rush when I got there. Stretched a little while waiting in line
Swim
  • 09m 32s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Despite my thoughts to the contrary, I'm a very strong swimmer. I have been hanging to the back of the pack (this time because I was talking to friends) and I feel like it is costing me a significant amount of time on the swim. I still finished 15th overall for my age group, which I think indicates I should be trying to start towards the front of the pack.
What would you do differently?:

Start towards the front!!
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Had a bit of trouble getting into shirt, I need to rethink what I wear during the race. Other than that, decent transition.
What would you do differently?:

New shirt.
Bike
  • 57m 38s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 13.01 mile/hr
Comments:

This course was really tough! On the first big hill, I thought I was flat, and tried to stop to check on it (and managed to fall off my bike in the process). Tire looked ok, but I was stuck walking the rest of the hill. Had to walk one other big hill later in the course, but overall passed more people than passed me.
What would you do differently?:

Train on hills! Tune up bike ahead of time to lessen chance of being low on air and having other minor mechanical problems.
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Had some trouble racking the bike, and legs were super shaky from the hilly ride. The run down the hill didn't help.
What would you do differently?:

Sit down to put on shoes? Elastic laces?
Run
  • 22m 23s
  • 2 miles
  • 11m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Ugh! My calf cramped up about 1/4 mile in, and I had to break to stretch it out. Had to walk some of the tough uphill, but probably could have pushed it and ran. Had a lot left to sprint at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Train on hills, practice running when tired (I know I can run 5-6 miles when I'm not tired, so this should have been a piece of cake!)
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank water.

Event comments:

Not as good as North East Tri, but still an enjoyable race. Would consider coming back next year (mainly to try and challenge myself to do better!)

Good job with the swim!  I read elsewhere that the first wave for women was HUUUUGE in terms of numbers.  If you swam in that time, you must have passed a lot people.  It sounds as if you don't need to start at the back of the pack unless you are uneasy in traffic like I am.  Also given your time, it sounds as if you don't need a wetsuit (were you wearing one?), at least when the water is as warm as it was that day...that could save you some time in future T1s

As far as the cramping, did you hydrate well before the race and on the bike?

Good job and good luck with the next one.

Thanks for the kind words about the swim!  The first wave for women did seem huge, so I think it would have made a big difference if I could have started towards the front.  I am getting used to the traffic of the swim now.  My only two races have been warm water, so I haven't bothered even looking into a wetsuit yet.  I need to take more time to think about the transitions, but I improved this time over my previous.

I think I definitely need to drink more on the bike, I feel a little unsteady getting my water out while riding, something I need to practice while training I guess.
