Overall Rank = 319/449
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 6/8
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 5:30am, ate a buttered cinn-raisin bagel. Drove to race site with my teammate and training mate, Sherman. Did all the usual check-in, set-up, quick-dip in the water before the waves started.
Event warmup:

Literally just stood in the sun, stretched, and swung my arms a little. Wasn't really nervous, but not entirely calm either. Newbies also in the last wave with us Athenas got to be "the nervous ones". I was OK. The deep water start is actually really cool at Lobsterman.
Swim
  • 27m 5s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

Hello chilly ocean! This swim was not warm, and almost too cold for my hands. I like the bay setting and everything about it. However, the organizers should add another buoy or two or even three! Too far between them and in bright sun it was hard to sight on #2 and #3 before making the turn to shore.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more drafting and get comfortable with it. Also include more "sprint" segments in the total course. I felt that my pace was too even, too flat, even though it was a significant PR over last year -- 6 minutes! Maybe current-assisted? I definitely felt like I was getting swept R-to-L at times, and I usually do swim straight.
Transition 1
  • 01m 59s
Bike
  • 1h 21m 38s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.26 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Be a little more aggressive cresting the hills; I lost some speed there just by "settling in" and relaxing too quickly. Also need to pay attention on the big, sweeping T-corners or 90-deg turns in the road. Nearly ran off-road on one and it was scary! Otherwise, felt great, fast, and in control.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Run
  • 55m 16s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

I really don't like the hills on Mile 1-2 of this run. They're steep little buggers, so I just have to power up and over them. It made me decide to hold the race until mile 3. I kept pace and walked up only one hill on Mile 1 and then by the turn-around I said, "OK, go time!" That let me power through the last 3 miles of hills without issues, and enjoy the downhill back to the start/finish.
What would you do differently?:

I want more of a sprint and a faster overall pace -- wish I'd worn my HRM to see how much harder I could've gone!
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing special at the finish line; just some sweaty hugs from teammates and a little key chain souvenir, which is cool instead of another medal. I ate some PB and pretzels, at least 3 orange slices, and 1/2 a banana. Lobster was waiting, so I went for beer first, then food much later. Loved it, enjoyed the awards, and really enjoyed talking with new people I met at the race as well as old friends who'd raced with me. It was such a good day! Such a friendly, warm vibe out there. Really awesome race.

hey your RR got buried in the 2nd page.

Nice race anyhow.  61 °F is cold water for this time of the year.  WAy to go with the swim PR.  I still think your bike and run splits are good.  Wish I would average over 18 mph at a more "relaxing" pace.

Nothing like looking back on last year's results and thinking "that was as good as I get?"

This year I was slower

but still came in 2nd Athena  *huh*?

More tomorrow once the splits for 2009 are published.  The time chip malfunctioned, again.

Cheers, -Sunny
