Gatorade still made me thirsty. I will do more water, but like someone else said - sometimes it's nice to have something other than water along for the ride. |

That's what I do, one bottle of water, one bottle of Cytomax in a 200 calorie concentration for a two hour ride. I'll also keep a gel with me in case I decide to go longer and just refill a bottle at a gas station or something. Gatorade is a terrible excuse for a sports drink. Cytomax, HEED, GU20, etc are all much better. Ditch the Gatorade, find a better source of fuel and start using it 30 minutes into the ride. |

I am now a HUGE fan of Gu2o. (and I'm not sponsored by them I'd suggest going to a store, like REI, and buying the sample size packets and trying different drink mixes to see what works for you. |

Thus something is needed. and nope. not falling for anything. I think you'll find that as you develop more fitness, you'll need fewer calories. My first year of doing this tri stuff, I felt like I needed to take in some sort of nutrition on even an hour's long run, and I brought gatorade on every bike ride I did. Three years later, I've completely quit using sports drinks. Now, I'm not training for ironman or anything. But, I have done a 3 hour ride with nothing but water (lots) and a couple of gels. And, I don't feel like I need a gel on a run unless I'm up to or past the half mary distance. In other words, figure out what works for you NOW, but be prepared to change it as you go. |

Gatorade is just an old solution to a problem, we have learned a lot more about our bodies and what they need since it was created eons ago. It's pretty much high fructose corn syrup, water and a light dose of electrolytes. Drinks like HEED, GU20 and Cytomax depend on maltodextrin and less on simple sugars. HEED in fact has no simple sugars in it's formula at all. On top of that, they usually provide more electrolytes than standard Gatorade. Gatorade doesn't supply the right kind of calories or enough of them, it's just living on it's name and marketing. |

Extreme Veteran 669![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Olathe, Kansas | Subject: RE: Gatorade makes me thirsty.I think you should stay away from gatorade. If you look at the nutrion info on the label, you will find out that the no.1 ingredient is high fructose corn syrup. That should not be a part of anybody's nutrition. For more info on HFCS, google it and you will learn a lot about it. Instead look for sport drinks that have carbs that are more valuable to endurance athletes. Check Infinit, Accelerade, Hammer Nutrition and others. Gatorade is a commercialized peace of .....that has no nutritional value, but is pushed trough everywhere as they have unlimited advertising and marketing budget. |

Don't we just break it down into simple sugars anyway? And the need for more electrolytes is questionable. I have never seen anything that says Gatorade is any better or worse. If you have studies, I'd be interested. |

There is no scientific evidence showing that HFCS is any worse for you than any other type of sugar. All things in moderation, and you'll be fine. HFCS is carbs, by the way. All sugars are. |

Cycling Guru 15134![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Gatorade makes me thirsty. The only benefit to maltotexdrin is that, as Scout mentioned, it is a complex carb that is broken down into glucose/glycogen. This takes a little time, so you do not get the "sugar spike" that you get from sucrose/fructose based drinks. The reason to go to the other fluids over Gatorade has more to do with the sickly syrupy taste that you get, not it's carbo content. In fact, Gatorade has the ideal ratio of the types of carbs that is has to the amount of fluid. Meaning: Your body can only process a 6 - 8% solution of that sort of carb. If you take in more (like slamming gels during that period) you actually need to add water to dilute the solution in your stomach so that it will absorb. Don't do that? Guess what ...... you'll be the one we see hurling on the side of the course as your stomach bloats and rebels. |

Expert 1049![]() ![]() Burnaby, BC | Subject: RE: Gatorade makes me thirsty.Right, she has ranked the different sugars, but there is no quantitative discussion on the differences. It might be a poor choice of sugars (and I hate the taste but some people like sweet more than me) but how much will a poor choice of sugars affect you? As for Gatorade living off of hype and marketing, most of that is targeted to the couch potato and the huge soft drink market, not to the age grouper. |

Member 381![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Gatorade makes me thirsty.(1) dehydration may not kill you (actually i think it will - try not drinking any fluid for a month), but it certainly degrades performance. I believe it has been shown to degrade performance over time frames that are of interest to us as triathletes. (2) you lose fluids by sweating (3) your stomach can only absorb fluids at a particular rate (gastric emptying rate). this rate is influenced by a number of factors - e.g. body temperature, exertion, *and* the concentration of various electrolytes in the water (sports drink) I think gatorade actually studies some of these things to optimize the rate of upake (how fast your stomach will process the fluid) which is why they have a particular balance. Also, you do not want hyponeutremia (too little electrolyte or too much water). if you drink too much you will feel it slosh in your stomach. eventually you will have to pee or worse. for info, cf. references in http://www.sportsci.org/2006/dsr.htm finally, find a drink that works for you and use it to control your thirst. i like gatorade and water alternating. |

1 | Subject: RE: Gatorade makes me thirsty.Apologizing in advance for resurrecting an old thread... but I wanted to throw in my two cents for the original poster. Also just to be preface, I'm not training for a triatholon but maybe this will add some insight. I found this forum by googling "Gatorade makes you thirsty." The reason I googled it was because I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant and drinking an enormous amount of water.. A few days ago I got so tired of water that I decided to add Gatorade to it for flavor (1/2 water, 1/2 Gatorade). Since I started adding gatorade, I have consistently woken up in the middle of the night absolutely parched and with swollen hands. I've then had to drink twice the amount of water I normally drink in order to feel hydrated again. For whatever reason (whether it's the salt/sugar content or something else) I sincerely believe that Gatorade makes me thirsty. You're not alone! |

New user 54![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Gatorade makes me thirsty.I do not need any scientific "proof" that something is bad if a bunch of ppl have same symptoms of dehydration and swelling. Have tried gatorade, it pretty much sums up in one word - awful. And I didn't know it contains HFCS, that explains the bloating and dehydration. On a related note, I could not believe what I have seen somewhere in the news portal on some site - some manufacturers actually marketing the HFCS with commercials! It's gone beyond apsurd, it's became downright ridicilous. Parading with a known bad supstance for your health ain't gonna help anyone, the least of wich the manufacturers. It would be much better for them to get rid of that stuff from the food, but then again, a profit must be made, right? Edited by meow-cat 2008-10-01 8:05 AM |

Too much of anything is bad. But there is no scientific proof that HFCS causes any health issues when taken in moderation. As for Gatorade causing dehydration issues... Of course it can. It's got electrolytes in it. Any time you ingest too much, your body's natural balance is thrown off, and you experience these issues. Key word in all this: MODERATION. |
