Virgina Beach Neptune Festival

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 33m 27s
Overall Rank = 175/502
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 26/46
Pre-race routine:

Heavy pasta at lunch the day before. Got up at 5:30 and left the house at 6. Arrived about 6:30 and got a spot about a third from the end toward the bike exit. Sun screen and power bar with water as waited for the start.
Event warmup:

Walking the 8 blocks to the 16th street swim start. A bit of stretching and getting goggles wet.
Swim
  • 18m 2s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was very calm for the ocean swim. I breath to the left so I could see the shore most of the way. Seemed to go a bit wide.
What would you do differently?:

Move closer to the shore after the first turn.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

7 of 46 for T1. Good transition. Forgot the rubberband but didn't need it. It seemed like a long run up the beach in the sand but was able to find the bike quick.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 45m 29s
  • 14 miles
  • 18.47 mile/hr
Comments:

A little bumpy at the beginning so I didn't go into aero right way. Arms were still wet and slippery when but on the rests. Got into a good quick cadence after the first few miles. Held back some for the run but not much. I was disappointed with the time considering the level of effort. Perhaps it is my 10 year old & 100 lbs bike, or more likely bike fitness. Need to ride more for speed. Legs felt tired at about mile 10. I didn't taper for this race and I could tell on the last part of the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Wipe of arms to help stability in aero after the transition.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

26/46 for T2. Zoots worked well in their first real life trial. Put socks on first. Got some cold water before heading out.
Run
  • 26m 46s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Run started nicely. Legs weren't too rubberly at the start and I was able to get up to a good pace quickly. After mile 1 (8 min), heat started to affect me and I shifted from speed focus to keeping up a base pace. I was able to hang in there but the time was below my goal.
What would you do differently?:

Not much you can do about the weather.
Post race
Warm down:

Went down to the ocean and had some snacks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'll say weather but mental and physical focus is on next weeks Oly. Was pleased with the transitions which was the focus.

Event comments:

A well run race. Doesn't have the same frills as a typical 'Set-up' event with music and announcements but a fun event. Nice spread of snacks at the end with many helpful volunteers.

Good solid race (I dream of being able to swim like that).  Good luck at your Olympic Distance this weekend.
