...but I don't want to pay that much.  All I need to know is how far I've run and how quickly (or slowly) I got there.  Is there anything less expensive.  Thanks for your help!

I just upgraded from the Garmin 201 to the 305.   My 201 konked out after almost 5 yrs.

You can still buy the 201 and 205's but I think the 305 is the way to go.  Plenty of 201's still online and on Ebay.  The USB (305) vs. the Serial Port (201) is a big advantage.  The 305 is smaller, picks up the signal and holds it a little better.  My 201 did not like the water at all.  The 305 is more resistant.

I am guessing you'll pay approx. $90 for the 305.  I paid $191.00 (free shipping) for mine a few weeks ago - fyi.   So far, I love it.  BUT I love Garmin product.  Customer Service has always treated me well.

I used my 305 just yesterday for a timed physical fitness test.  While everyone else took off way too fast, I knew my exact pace, distance, HR, etc. and my pacing was consistent with my planned run.  It helped.

Good luck!

How precise do you want to be?  Nike+ is a low cost add-on for your iPod that will give you time distance and pace.  They even have a standalone system if you don't have/want to use an iPod Nano.  The 301 is relatively inexpensive but any GPS will do if it can record a breadcrumb trail.  I used to use a Garmin eTrex that I had.

I'm shopping for one too and have decided on a 301. Its bigger than the 305 and lacks a few features but for me will do all the GPS and basic HRM functions I think I will need. You can e-bay one for around $120.

As I tried to say in piggpen35's thread, the 305 is great, has better reception, and is smaller than the 201/301. If I had to buy again today it's what I would get. But for the price-conscious, the 201/301 is a bargain for a perfectly fuctional device. I've enjoyed my 301 for nearly three years now.

Since HRM capability wasn't on your want list, you can get the 201 for ~$90 shipped on ebay.

The 301 seems kind of big.  I'm bidding on a Nike+ on e-bay.  Then I'll just get the lace thing that goes with it.  I already run with my Nano, so that's not a prob.  Thanks for the info.  Santa may bring me a 305, but I need something until then

yea the cheaper way to go is def with the nike, but then again not sure how reliable it is. How about if you run on the street or same path just figure out the distance (maybe by car) and use a regular watch and figure out ur time that way

No need to do it by car.  In the training log, you can set up routes based on local maps of your area (very detailed).  It gives precise distances and elevation gain/loss.  I use that, along with my watch and standard HRM to do my training.  The GPS would be nice for newer routes, but as long as I plan ahead and map them out, I can get the distances anyway.

I bought my Garmin 305 from E-bay. I got a refurbished one for half the price of brand new. It looks brand new, and runs brand new. No problems at all for half the price.

Anyone care to comment on the 305 Multisport package? This package comes with equip to take the 305 with you on the bike. I see that REI.com has it for around $259. Good deal? Anyone have this package?

Honestly, I would say no but I would purchase the 305 and then the quick release kit for around $25.  That allows you to take it off your bike and simply snap it onto a wrist band.

To comment on some other remarks people have made I believe the 305 is actually bigger than the 305 when you look at the weight and dimensions but only slightly.  The 201/301 is definately wider but is narrower especially when you look at how the 205/305 wraps around your wrist.

To the OP, get a 205 if you don't care about HR.  That will save you a little bit.
