Subject: Montauk HIM, am I ready?

So i am planning on racing the montauk half in 2 weeks, but would love some advice from some people before i potentially make a mess of it.

This was supposed to be my A race for they year, but untill recently really thought it was beyond me. Im really not sure if i have trained enough as i kind of decided that i wasnt going to be able to do this. Ive now changed my mind.

Over the past few months i've ran several half marathons around 1:30, did a couple of centuries on the bike, 2 sprint triathlons and have been hitting the pool fairly hard, to the point i can make the swim, just not very fast.

My question is should i be thinking about doing this race, i havent done any bike to runs at all. I feel like im fit enough, ive had a very steady constant level of running, swimming training and biking. Just concerned its not enough.

thanks in advance, and advice/tips would be great

no data in your logs makes hard to judge.  Based on a 1:30 1/2, I would say you will not make a mess of the run....as long as you get to the run in decent shape.

I did this race last year (my 1st HIM) and I will be there again this year (trying to get under 6 hours). Based on what you said in the original post... you are more than ready and you will be fine. Have fun! The course it beautiful and the support is great.

The run is more challenging than other half marathons I have done with some tough hills, but you are a better runner than me (based on your times, which blow mine away). Just watch out for the famed "murder hill" the worst part about that hill is you have to do it twice.

See you out there.

Hi! I just read your post in the NY forum. After reading what you wrote here, you should be able to complete it pretty well. It is my first time doing the half also, and although I am not in the best shape possible, coming off a great season and the oly last weekend, I am feeling pretty good. I plan on just doing some long workouts and resting a lot.

My race day strategy is to take it one discipline at a time, stay relaxed, and focus on fueling and hydrating.

agreed, im not scared of the race as parts. more concerned with bike to run.

will get a good ride to run in this weekend, its really the only way im going to find out if the body is ready.

Data wise,  here is the info from my one of my sprints this year, not sure if its of any help.

.5 mile swim 15:54 : T1 1:48 : 16 mile bike 51:37 18.6: T2 1:30: 3.1 mile run 20:48 total 1:33:13

Thanks mscotthall,

2 questions, what is the swim like? Im hoping for lake like condition, and how tough is the ride, very hilly? I would love to check the course before hand but that isnt possible.

Huh? Is this for real? You run a 1:30 half marathon and can do a century on the bike, and you're worried about a measly HIM?

Something tells me you'll be just fine.

Do it. If you will regret not trying, figure out a pace that you will readily finish but still push yourself and go for that time.

I'm well behind you on the run and haven't gone the distances you've biked, and I'm still in. My training levels have not been where I've wanted them to be and I'm not as prepared as I'd like to be, but I'll still be at the line. You should too.

Sneakerchimp... now is not the time to be questioning your training and worrying about if you've done too little.  If you've done a century then you're ahead of the curve. Hell dude you've probably done more to get ready for this HIM than I did for IMKY that I finished 3 weeks ago! I'd love to talk to you about it more and your build up for the race and try to put your mind at ease.

I'll be there that weekend doing the Sprint... I'll be getting into town around Midnight on Friday just to wake up less than 5 hours later to race the sprint. I will be hanging out for the HIM on Sunday so I can help you out wherever you need it.

Also if you want to rent some race wheels I'll have a bunch on hand... http://www.racewheelrental.com/

Seeyou out there!

you'll have great race support and great crowd support. you'll love it!

The swim is great. It's a triangle. Great landmarks as you swim. There is a sandy hill on the way out you can use and a tower on the way in that is exactly in line with the finish.

The water is very calm (like glass last year) and it was so calm the swim was almost boring.

The ride is nice. There aren't a crazy amount of hills. If it were really tough, I'd remember that. The thing I do remember about the hills is that for every climb, there is a fast long downhill section so you get to make up a lot of time. Check my race report for more info. The turnaround is very sharp so be careful. There will be volunteers telling you to slow down. More than a few people hit the ground when the tried to make the sharp turn.

Feel free to ask me for any help or info.

No problem,  completing.  You are more than ready, in fact I think you might do rather well.  You sound very similar to where I was before I entered my HIM.  They unfortunately canceled the swim due to weather so it turned out to be run bike run.  It went well and I had fun.

With the bike to run transition, just know you will feel like you are going slow off the bike.  Your legs will be tired, just be patient the legs will come around-how quickly they come will depend on how hard you hammer the bike.  The good news is you have 13.1 miles for them to come around!

thanks again, see you all out there.
