So the northern hemisphere season is coming to an end. I've read lots of your race reports in the last few weeks (thanks so much for doing them - they are a real inspiration for those of us working up to a first IM), and shared in your pain and glory.

Some of you are still on the high, some on a low, and lots somewhere in between.

So who's planning to do another IM next year? If so why, and if not why?

Thanks for sharing

Gerrard

I'm in again for IMKY 09.  My race did not go as planned (see RR) for details and I have to get revenge on the run course!

My IM training had more ups and downs than the hills on the bike course at IMKY.  Three weeks in May when I did basically nothing due to a ton of personal stuff, saddle issues, the list can go on.  Throw in the emotions that go along with the training; tired, cranky, the crazy hunger that goes on for months.  But all of that was worth the pride of crossing the finish line.  I wear my M-dot (see avatar) every day because I EARNED it.  Ironman is no longer just a race, but it's what I AM.

No IM for me in 2009.

It was a great accomplishment, but I had to give up my entire life to train for it. For 8 months my life was "I can't do ____ because I have to train." No parties with friends. No vacations. Etc.

I know for a lot of people, that's fine. They live for that. For me, not so much. I like being able to just take a Sunday off and rest... on a whim.

I also had to miss a lot of local races with my BT friends. "I can't do that sprint because I have to run 2 hours that day...can't miss a run for a sprint."

Not to mention the cost involved. All my money went towards training for the IM... and now I'm paying off the money I spent going to Kentucky. I want some fun money!

I'm not sure if I'll ever do an IM again. The training wasn't fun for me. I don't really thrive on morning sessions and I don't like waking up at 5:30 AM. I figure this stuff should be fun.

No, not in 2009 because my life will be changing with the adoption of a baby girl.

But I will do another IM. I absolutely loved it. I loved 80% of the training, too. I loved the feeling I got from going long week after week. So yes, I will again, but when my family is ready for me to. IM will wait on me.

I plan to be still doing them when I am retired! Maybe every other year or so then....

Yup, I did IMCdA this year and will be signing up for Ironman Arizona in 2009.

I have been asked the question often (Why are you signing up for another) and I was puzzled by the lack of a coherent answer on the tip of my tongue to throw out.

So, for now: "Because the Voices in my head told me to. (And So I will do so)"

I did IM Fl in '06 and hated the training.  I think it's because I did all my training on my own- I didn't have any training partners.  I had a great 1st IM so I wasn't motivated to do another one anytime soon.  And I wanted to take a break from tri training and run a lot of marathons and work on my running.

But...I think I've forgotten how awful the training is (LOL) because I'm signed up for IM Cozumel next November.  I love the IM race and want another IM experience.  This time my fiance is signed up as well so we'll be doing a lot of the training together, or as best as we can.  I think having someone else that's IM training will be better for motivational purposes.

Subject: RE: Why or why not IM in 2009

yes, I still have to race IM AZ in two months and then next year will be IM Louisville.

WHy? I love something that is all consuming like Ironman. It's an everyday deal, and a subject I can talk about all day with people. Unlike the local sprint or 5k that if you miss this weekend  you can just do a different one next, IM is sign up a year in advance and plan your life around it.

Plus I think I just like pain

I did IMKY this year with the intent that this was my one and only IM... I signed up for next year, mostly since I know I can do better in everything ,, plus I was a mental basket case a couple of weeks before the race that really threw me off

I just finished IMWI. I will not be doing one in 09, but plan on being in Madison again in 2010. Why? Time and money. I actually enjoyed the training, and feel a bit lost right now without a plan to follow, but I think a break from that level of training will keep me fresh and not burnt out. I plan to do other tri's next season, to include an HIM.
And the cost....I have a son in college so we don't have much "fun" money lying around anymore. Between the race fee, hotel, gas, food, misc. etc...It was quite expensive.
But.... I will be back. I absolutely loved the experience despite the race not going exactly as planned due to some GI issues (see race report). So now I have some things to work on and a time to beat.

I trained for my first this year. I enjoyed the training a lot and found it a growing experience in many ways. My plan prior to IM was to do another but not sure when. After IM I decided I do IMFl in '09 and we got tickets to travel down and support a friend and sign up. Right around the time school started I came to realize there is a tough time in a parents life before school and first few weeks of school. I kept thinking how could I do IM training while all this is going on. I also got my new cyclocross bike and started learning and trying out that.

The unique opportunity opened up to sign up for IM Canada without traveling to sign up. Canada allows me to train without the kids being in soccer during heavy training time and being done with my IM while school starts another hectic time. Plus I can race Cross after recovering...totally different event that is exciting and a welcome difference than tri training/racing.

It seemed to work out perfectly and I was able to get into Canada on line the second time they opened it.

Ouch. 3 IMs left and we are chop liver.

Anyway, not doing on next year due to cost and amount of training involved. I had 2 really, really great HIM that I plan to rock out next year.

I'm doing IMCDA in 2009. It will be my first. I wanted to to do one in 2010 (the year I turn 40), but after struggling with injuries and seeing how active and involved my kids are getting into their own hobbies, I decided to bump the IM up a year. This may be my only IM. I probably won't do another until my kids are grown. They are 7 and 10 right now. I did not want to put their childhood on the back burner to my triathlon training. This will be a year of sacrifices for my whole family to make this dream possible. After CDA, I plan on returning to short course racing. Much easier to get the training done without cutting into family time.

Pam

I just finished IMMOO 2 weeks ago and am in again for '09.  Why?  Because I really enjoyed the training.  Most of it anyway.  I am absolutely addicted to the finish line.  Even though I am not fast I absolutely love to race.  The people I have met through triathlon are the greatest people I know, add in the IM distance and it makes them even better. Finally, I left a whole lot of room for improvement in Madison this year.

Did not do an IM this year, but did do a 1/2 IM at the end of July.

I will do Moo in '09, with a better plan and bigger goal.

Why do it?  Because of the camaraderie of some great peeps, the training to get there (and it's almost in my back yard!), being treated like a pro in a very well-run race, and the sheer pleasure/thrill of accomplishing such a feat!  To meet such fantastic fans and support, and hear Mike Reilly's greeting at the Finish Line!

Oh, yeah, and the t-shirt and finisher's medal.  And the hat.  And that space blanket.

Interesting thread.

I did IMKY in 2007 and while training I thought that would be my only IM simply because of time and training effort. However, that all changed when I crossed the finish line. I knew I'd be back. I wanted to not only hopefully improve on my time but just have the whole experience again.

I planned to do one again in 2010 but then on Aug 18th my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer so I decided to try to sign up for IMWI 2009. I got lucky and there were online spots and I got one. I know that sounds strange but I decided I want to use Janus Charity Challenge to raise money for a breast cancer charity. Maybe I feel helpless in some ways and maybe this is a way to feel I'm fighting the cancer along with my wife.

I will be setting up my JCC page as soon as they update their website to include next years' races.

While training for IMKY '08 I wasn't sure if I'd want to do another one in the near future.  I had planned on focusing on marathons (Boston in April) and maybe some shorter TRIs but after IMKY I found myself checking the Ironman website periodically to see if registration was still open for next year's race.  I guess that was my sub-concious way of saying I wanted to do another one, so I signed up for '09.  Oh yeah, and I love running down that chute with the spotlights and the crowd...makes you feel like a rock star.

I just finished my first at the Grand Columbian. I loved it, the training less so but still enjoyed it, I felt good after the race, did my best, but I really dont have the base to excel at it yet. Need to work on my running, biking, and yeah, swimming. Going to concentrate on the half distance next year and getting my running up to speed.

doing it just to do it was cool, next time I hit an IM I would like to be at least middle of the pack.

Did IMFL in 07.  Didn't sign up for 08, as my children were kind of tired of having to put ME to bed...but I told them I'd do it again in 09, so they are ready.  I don't really care for the shorter distances anymore (St. A's Oly being the exception).    There is nothing I love more than a 6 hour bike ride   LOVE IT!

So in 09, I will try to go faster....and double my funds raised for MDA from 25k to 50k!

I would LOVE to do another one in '09 - but my wife has threatened me with divorce if I do one! If I could do it and not train - I'd be in tomorrow!

I went from sprints to an IM in a year, and it seems like all I did from last December was train for IMKY. I LOVE IT, race went great, had a blast, finished strong - but not for me next year.

I've a friend who is shooting for 2010, but I'll probably jump back in next year.

'09 will be a speed year for me. Get faster on short course, and a couple of HIM

Will be doing Vineman 8/1/09.  Scared to death that I won't be able to get all the training in...  The reason... I promised myself that I would do one before I turn 40.... I turn 40 11/24/09...so need to get it done next year.

I did IM CdA in June and loved the whole experience. From day one, I said I was only going to do this once, but now I think I would like to somewhere in the future, but it won't be in 09. My family gave up a lot for me during the last year, and I won't put them through that again so soon. I will continue with shorter distances for now and maybe when the kids are a bit older I will try another IM.

I am in for my third at IM Cozumel 09 - Coz was an easier sell to the Mrs. than Louisville.  I swore off IMs several times along the run course at KY last month, but changed my mind at the end.  I am going to focus more on doing well in two 70.3 races next year with the IM being less of a priority.  Like most people here, I love the training and the IM lifestyle.
