Registration is now open.  Word is, they are only taking 1800 athletes in 2009.  Now maybe the first few waves will only ride 3 abreast instead of 4

I signed up for this and it will be my first 70.3. I may be in over my head but there's a lot of time from now until then. Anybody have any good advice on hotels in the area? or about the course, town, or anything else in general?

Just hope they don't cancel the swim again.

I'd like to make this my first HIM but I heard the roads are in very poor condition for the bike. Anyone else with some experience here?

Chances are there will some waves in L Michigan. Chances are good for a cancelled swim. it is the new trend in triathlon...look for it more in '09.

I thought the roads were great. Superfast roads in fact. The first mile was under construction but the rest was nice! Just watch out for the terds riding in the middle of the lane.

I'm not sure I follow....They cancel the swim if there's waves in Lake Meechigan? That sounds pretty weak....or were you being sarcastic?

The swim was canceled this year due to waves and rip tides. The swim was replaced with a 2 mile run.

I disagree. The roads for the first half of the bike were horrible!

I don't think the roads were smooth at all the last 20 or so miles were, but the first 36 were terrible, the road was full of yellow sponges from aero bottles, CO2 cartridges, water bottles, you name it from hitting the hard bumps and cracks in the road. I've been on worse but I would not say this is a smooth ride, about 40-45% is good the rest is bad. I was just not impressed with this race, have to catch shuttle buses by 5:45 or walk a mile with all of your stuff and bike. My wave was a 7:58 so that's standing around for over 2 hours, then cancelled swim, won't be doing it again.

Man I wish I would've read all the negative race reports before I impulsed registered for this. I just assumed it would be a top notch event with the "Ironman" name behind it.

With that said, somebody, anybody please tell me there are going to be changes made this year and I shouldn't let all the neg. reports bring me down. This is a pretty big bummer.

Even if there are no changes made...well, it would be nice to have calm water for a swim...I would not hesitate to lay down the money to do this race again.  I honestly believe that some of the descriptions I read above were not from the same course I raced this summer.  Believe me, where I train here in NW Wisconsin we have some pretty sh!tty roads and at no time did the word "terrible" enter my mind to describe the Steelhead roads either while racing the bike course or at anytime afterwards while talking to racers.  I was in wave 8 and I never saw anything near the amount of bike-related garbage on the road that some evidently did.  Don't worry, you didn't waste your money.

Maybe I missed something, but unless racers took care of packet pickup the previous weekend in Chicago you had to rack your bike on Friday before the race, so having to deal with a bike on race morning should have been a non-issue for 99.5% of racers.  I thought the parking at the shuttle area was convenient and the shuttle to the T area was a piece of cake.

My husband and I are planning on registering for this race whenever we free up the cash. I've heard good things about it for the most part. I've yet to ride a single tri bike course that was 100% perfect. So just take everything with a grain of salt. You'll have a good time.

Worst case scenario, if it sells out before we register we'll just head up to Spirit of Racine.

I was in wave 13 and believe me there was a lot of stuff thrown from bikes by then, the guy in front of me lost his water bottle from the back rack and lucky for me it rolled straight to the right on the shoulder. I don't think you wasted your money, it's organized well, and volunteers are good, but I do think there are other HIM that will be less expensive and just as good or better. I know the Muncie Endurathon is an awesome event, I was told the Door HIM near Green Bay is a great event. I guess calling the road terrible was a bit extreme, but they
advertised it as silky smooth and some of the best roads you will every ride and it was far from that, like I said maybe the last 20 miles.

I've done it the past two years and I would say this years roads were better than last. Far from perfect but I have rode much worse.

Top notch event. First year was perfectly calm water and then this year was surf city.

You didn't waste your money, enjoy it.

You didn't waste your money. There is no perfect race...you can find positives and negatives in all races. The more you race, you will find that swims getting canceled are part of the sport. Everyone gets bummed when the swim is canceled but there is nothing you can do.

Train hard and go to Steelhead with the mind set you are going to have fun and you will enjoy yourself.

Do Racine instead. I signed up for this as my "A" race this summer... thinking it would be a really classy event put on by NA sports... since it's part of the 70.3 series... but it was just your usual great big giant triathlon, with blatant drafting and blocking on the bike...and no one from USAT to enforce the rules.

And they cancelled the swim... horrifying for me.

Edited to add: We did have the coolest group of people, though and the BEST lakehouse. By far. I barely remember the race. It's the fun we had before and after that I remember the most.

If you like a big event, do Steelhead. If you don't like other people near you and get easily frustrated by crowds and rule-breakers (aka cheaters ), don't to Steelhead. Go into the race informed as to what to expect, and then you won't be caught off guard. People DO draft, and people DON'T ride to the right.

The roads were excellent for Michigan, but that's because half the roads in MI are unpaved, so it's all relative. There were some imperfect sections, but if you thought that race had 'terrible' roads, I would LOVE to know what Utopian land you live in

The course if flat, fast and fun. A lot of excellent athletes show up to race as well as a lot of beginners. It's well organized and has awesome volunteers. Despite the fact that the swim was cancelled, the organizers still did an excellent job handling the conditions. Of course, there are other HIMs that may fit your niche, but like I said above, as long as you know what you're getting into, it's a great time!

Oh yeah- and a BT lakehouse is the way to go!!! Vrbo.com rocks

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. I look forward to the experience.

But what's up with these lakehouses, are they expensive, because I'm just a college kid. I may be having to set up shop at the Super 8 or just a plot of land. is there a website or something I can go to? Sounds like a blast!

He's right. I was just really really really bummed about the swim. They took the thing I'm best at, and eliminated it from the race entirely. Then they took the thing I'm worst at, and made me do it twice. It was enough to make a girl cry. Frown

But... apparently the riptides were bad. So at least we're all still here to complain about it. Wink

I didn't notice anything regarding the pavement. Seemed OK to me. Although I was pretty busy with my own issues on the bike...

Heh. See? Who has time to worry about the pavement?

Are all the roads you train on nicely paved?  If they are, then you must pay a lot of taxes for them to be that way.  They are fine, so fine that I think I still managed to get a 23 mph average on the bike.  Some road have crack and they were a couple of pot holes but they were marked.  Yeah there was a lot of people out there on the roads but we managed.

The swim issue was mother natures fault, nothing that could be done about that.

Don't worry about it, just focus on getting some lodging and then on your training.

Just keep an eye out for some awesome person to set up a rental house ( like Jazz at Steelhead or Whizzzz at IM CDA) and try to get in on it. I was at Steelhead as a runner on a BT relay team and was fortunate enough to stay at the Jazz rental house and had a great time. It was cheaper then a hotel and we had a great view of Lake Michigan. Not to mention Chef Jorge's awesome cooking.

Personally Steelhead was a little to crowded for me and I'm glad I was running, as the issues on the bike course would drive me crazy. I enjoy the smaller independent races, but would go back to Steelhead for the relay as it was more laid back way to do a race.

If I was going to do another mid summer HIM in 2009, I'd be going back to Muncie for the 30th running of the Endurathon. Swim in a reservoir, great closed bike course on smooth roads for 50 of the 56 miles, and a decent out and back run where you can actually give some shouts out to fellow BTers.

Good luck at Steelhead.
