Pre-race routine:

had a great carbo load dinner Dinner at the Mullanes. Thanks Mike and Julie. Madii was great after we duct taped her to the couch. Y and Willie a good time with the sleep over. Sam is still thinking about it. Had a shitty nights sleep. Up at 5:00am before the alarm. Coffee, toast and grape juice. 2- R-stops. Pumped tires and rode to race. 1/2 mile big deal. Met a couple other doing the same at 5:45.
Kinda sparse when I there. Sue B from work did my body marking. She did a superb job. Racked bike opposite KenJ's. We stood there like greeters at Walmsrt. Hi to everyone we knew. Wandered aver to see the porta potties. Hi to Andy at the LBS. On the way back he says oh want to ride the Transition carbon today? Sure. Looked at it and would have had a hard time fitting it to me so quickly so I decline but next time I'm sure I'll write RV&E Bike Shop all over my body and ride that thing to the max!
Rstock and I want for a little jog and caught up with M-teef. He had biked up from Elmira yesterday. Caught up with sister. She wasn't that nervous this year. Drank a little.
Had an hour from the time athlete meeting and my wave. help Mike setup the BT fly although no one used it. Need to bring chairs next year. Stood for a while with Kam watching waves go out then got to corral up and get in the water.
Water was cool. Like 60-65. The announcer said that if we were cold hug the person next to you. I heard Mike moan. That's when I turned hugged him big and dragged him into the water. Then we waited.
Event warmup:

Jog with Rstock and a couple 50 yds swims. Pu my wet suit on to the waist to warm up my legs.

Comments:

What drafting except off me. I think I did well because I started right and pretty much went left cutting off the competition. I had a hard time without sun to navigate. I zig zagged out bad. Bouy to bouy was good and dead one. Return was easy. Volunteer shirts with bright yellow so once I picked the shore spot I could sight on them. Swam till my hands hit the bottom. Ran out and waited to T1 to remove suit. Been working all summer to run on gravel and did fine on the stone dust path. 2nd or 3rd in for the wave.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better. Probably could have study the course better.
Transition 1

Comments:

Helmet on/suit off at the same time?? I don't have that many hands. Suit slipped off fast. Got a little drink of Tigerade. M-teef was there cheering me on, as well as BIL. Had to run the bike to that other end of transition. Clip clop clip clop. Not many people around so things were good.
What would you do differently?:

Need a pair of shoes that are easier to get into.
Bike
  • 43m 3s

Comments:

Knew I had to hammer the course the best I could. Got up to speed well. made is my mission to work hard to reel in the biker in front of me. I definitely passed more then I was passed. I hard a time understanding why some bikers just rode out in the middle of the road. Stay right folks. Figured I could aero bar around the Lake-to-Lake to the right. Glad the traffic was nill. Practically hit the ditch on the other side. Took a gel and drank most the aero bottle. The ride into transition was narrow and for some reason people forgot they were in a race. Took a few risk hugging the curb to pass people, we came in on the left side of the road. Spent most the time in the aero bars. I even stood to do one of the steep hills. Eat your heart Lance!
What would you do differently?:

get Andy to offer the tri bike earlier. Little more drink.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Long run to the rack spot. Clip clop, clip clop. Had put my belt on for the bike so I won't forget the damn thing again. Tigered up and went for it.
What would you do differently?:

We had assigned racks but try to get closer to the bike out to cut the run.

Comments:

Good still ahead of Mike run feels OK. Gotta remember to pick up my feet. No slogging. About a half mile in I feel a tap on my right shoulder. Oh I'm not falling for that old trick. It's Mike passing on the right. He is cruising well. See ya Mike. Get off the trail and there is Y, Willie and gang cheering me on. Sweet. Made up for stinky Mike passing me. All along the course I hear "Go Du" from other runners I know or the crowd. Sweet. I felt I ran well. Y told me I i really didn't look that good. Mid fived Mike, Rob, Bob, and few others.
What would you do differently?:

Run. Run, Run.
Post race
Warm down:

Stood and inhaled hard and long. Drank. Had a great crew there to greet me across the line. Funny set u on the chute. Closed off except for one opening in in the corner. I think they were corralling off the water. Took the shoes off and chatted. Rearranged transition and got a dry shirt. back to crowd and had a Fish sandwich then a chicken sandwich.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Navigation on swim little to much back and forth on the leg out. Should have study the course a little. Water in the right eye piece didn't help either.
Get Andy to offer me the tri bike sooner.
Run is still developing. Could have used s few more bricks in September.

Event comments:

I really enjoy this event. It was my first tri 4 years ago. THe number of people I've met and enjoy being friends with is great.
Thanks you Y and Willie for coming down and cheering me along with a lot of other people along the way. Every time in transition and every turn of the run I heard my name.
I have to bow to Mike. But getting closer. I have to run Moms in Motion avatar for month since sis beat me on the run.

Now look for a Doggy Du next year.

Nice race there Big D.  I bet your age dropped a couple of years on the course.  That swim was amazing and the bike leg holy smokes you turned it up a few notches.  You looked great out on the run course.  I would have loved to spend more time chatting with you.  Maybe a late season bike ride.
