Expert 735 Chatham, Ontario | Subject: Do you ever get BURNT OUT I think I am feeling a little burnt out. I am dropping too many workouts. I am lazy and very unmotivated. I am having ALOT of troble getting out of bed to workout in the morning and getting away from the office to swim at lunch. How do you get out of this feeling? |

Master 1678 Olney, MD | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT Yes!! I went through it the past few weeks I'm training for a marathon and just didn't feel like running. To help out with it I did some runs for time instead of distance, switched up my route a bit, and put some new songs on my Ipod. I don't beat myself up too much though for not wanting to train. This is supposed to be fun and, the way I look at it, if it's not enjoyable... what's the point? |

Master 1553 Elm Grove | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT If you are done racing for the year, take some time off. I got this feeling earlier this year and I just took a week completely off and felt much better after. |

Champion 5345 Carlsbad, California | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT Is it really "Burnout" or is it just that your Mojo has gone missing? Meaning, train through it and it will get better. Do some extra things to make training more interesting. Get a massage or a new piece of gear. Or better, train someplace new or try out a new workout. (Something that will keep you engaged) |

Veteran 172 San Antonio | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT I was feeling pretty burnt out a couple of weeks ago. Training seemed like a chore and I was tired. I felt like I was going backwards in my conditioning. I took a Thursday off and still felt that way. I took both Saturday and Sunday off, no work, just hanging out. On Monday, I was excited about getting to go for a ride, Tuesday I couldn't wait to get to the pool. I took a pretty easy week, did a race Sunday and I felt great. I'm ready to get back to work. Rest did wonders for me. |

Extreme Veteran 436 | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT take some time totally off. I mean skip a workout and don't look back. When training for my IM and I missed a workout I continually beat myself up over it, which only made the burn out feeling worse. In the later weeks of my training when I missed one I FORGOT about it. What is missed can not be made up so forget about it and move on. Just moving on and not dwelling on a missed workout will make a world of a difference. And oh ya, when you "miss" one, go out and do something unrelated and truly fun i.e. movies, zoo, family time. |

Extreme Veteran 405 | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT I have had this happen two seasons in a row actually. In both cases I took some serious time off, as in two months this past time. It was rough on me getting restarted, but this time I took the winter maintenance bike program and I am doing just the bike portion and a swim here and there. When it is over in October I will start one of the other winter maintenance programs and try to keep up with the bike, but still going to be just trying to stay busy. Rest is most likely the answer you need. |

Expert 906 Brookings South Dakota | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT At the very beginning of the summer in four weekends I had two cycling races and three triathlons. After that third weekend I was a little tired and really glad there was only one tri left! |

New user 143 | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT i completed my 3rd and final tri of the season a couple of weeks ago and had the same feeling in the last month or so leading up to the race. i forced myself through the last few weeks of training even though I felt tired and didn't really want to do it. now that the race is over and i gave myself some time off, i'm getting the itch to get out and continue my off season training. maybe a little break wouldn't be too bad of an idea if you don't have a race coming up. |

Member 43 Anchorage | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT I am just recovering from a long phase of burnout. I did my first Oly distance race in early August and had a very tough time recovering from the race and just could not motivate to do any kind of workout. I took a couple weeks off, then took a couple weeks of very unstructured excercise (I couldn't even bring myself to look at this website or log any of my workouts). I am just getting back this week to a normal routine, although I have decided to skip any formal training plan and just run/bike/swim as the mood strikes me for the next few months. I think it important to listen to your body and mix it up. |

Expert 1183 Fort Wayne, IN | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT I did my first tri in mid August and have kept up my training volume. After 3 weeks (ended last Saturday) I was pretty burned out the next day and I'm taking a recovery week and trying to get at least 8 hours sleep each night. Last week I only got about 6 hours a night. |

Elite 4372 Connecticut | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT I'm there right now. I am training for a half marathon and just can't wait until it's over!!! I'm not having any fun and only do my runs to get the miles in. I am still trying to find time to swim and bike too. My body is crapping out and I'm not happy. I'll be glad when October 11 is over and I can relax and have fun again. I think this is probably something we all go through at one point or another. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT Yes. After riding and training and racing (sometimes up to 3 times a week in peak season) for years as a road cyclist I was physically and mentally toast. I completely (and I mean COMPLETELY) stopped riding in '98 and sold all my seven of my bikes by '01. I was just done and had zero motivation to train or compete. I just wish I had backed it off earlier and went back to enjoying it instead of trying to compete at my highest level for so long. It would have put me in a totally different place now. If I did not have a 5 year layoff who knows what I might have accomplished! |

Expert 735 Chatham, Ontario | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT THANKS so much people! This is exactly what I needed to hear - that I am not alone. I think I am going to buy myself a new outfit. I took this week off. I might even get a case of diet energy drinks to give myself a kick in the pants. I really like the first replyer - if it's not enjoyable... what's the point? I am good to go on Monday! |

Master 1249 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT I'm super duper burnt out now. I've been skipping workouts, and just felt tired and unmotivated. Getting up in the morning to train before work? What a joke! I've got 6 weeks to go until I'm done with my last HIM and marathon. I'm taking it one day at a time. I'm also trying to find people to train with- which is a challenge since many people's season is coming to a close. I also MADE myself go to masters this morning..I always have good swims at masters and I needed that today. Since it sounds like you don't have races left, take some time off like the others said. Hopefully you'll be ready to go in a few days!! |

Fishers, IN | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT Courtney, I am right there with you. I can't wait for the taper, cause I am tired of all of the training and the lack of light. All the people I used to ride with in the evenings started to not show up since their seasons are over and it is getting dark earlier. Its hard to stay motivated. After Nov 8th its time for a good break. I am also a bit envious of all my runner friends who will be doing Chicago without me. I had signed up for Chicago before qualifying for Clearwater, but have decided to forgo running the marathon since it would be "another weekend out of town" and I would likely run it hard and potentially jeopardize my HIM. I think I can pull myself out of this funk for three more weeks and then ease into a taper. Burnout I think comes with the extended effort - |

Extreme Veteran 644 Anaheim | Subject: RE: Do you ever get BURNT OUT Take a training vacation. Beyond the mental component, fatigue cis accumulated all the way down to the cellular level. Go have fun so you can approach your winter base refreshed. Great time to take care of all those other things that can slip while training like washing the car! |
