Subject: IM KY 2009 Game Plan

I'm signed up for IM KY in 2009, and I'm trying to nail down a game plan for the next 341 days and would love a couple of opinions.  I'm coming from a year of training, so I don't have a huge endurance base, (yes I know... 2010 would have been a better idea).

Anyways, I'm running a half-mary in 2 weeks.  Then planning on starting the BT Beginner 1/2 Ironman plan on October 12th.  This should take me into the first week of March.  Then I'm switching over to the BT Beginner Ironman plan.  The problem I'm running into is this leaves me with a couple of weeks open before IM KY.  Should I move one of my start dates for my plans back so it matches directly with when my IM? Or repeat some of the weeks?

Looking for a little help, and would love to hear what you guys are planning for the year!

I agree with taking a break.
I was similar to you, after signing up last year, I was eager to go and started pretty heavily into my training, and kept it right up through the Intermediate IM BT program leading up to the race. Problem was, about a month out, I was burnt out mentally and really had to force myself to keep it up. I think I would have been better off just to keep a good base up to the start of the plan 20 weeks out.

Best of luck,

A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow!*  Looks like you've got a good plan.  In the spring you can re-evaluate and make some adjustments if needed.

Congratulations on comitting to IMKY!  It's a long year.  Try to enjoy the training as much as possible.  You'll do great.  It seems like the training plans I have reviewed are structured fairly tightly in getting your body to peak at the optimal time relevant to race day.  I don't know if I would want to be the one to second guess the program.  However if you need to alter things a bit in the beginning, I think it would be better than changing things at the end of the plan.  See you in Louisville.

great thread, I sign up too and found a 36 wk program that I am going to follow. that lets me have a couple of months of base building. I do like your idea of the two plans with a break in the middle though. What everyone tells me is listen to your body and train smart.
Good luck and see you in louisville...

Thats great that you are going to get a jump on things by starting the HIM plan now.  You really need to be able to commit to those full IM hours once that plan starts because it just goes up from there!  There are plenty of people who go for the IM distance after their first season, trust your judgement and make sure youre comfortable with your fitness.  Plenty of time to get you in to shape both physically and mentally.  Dont be afraid to rest and take a break when you need it!

Is that the free one available online from a former coach?

If so I used that one for a while last year. Really well written.

Really enjoy seeing everyone active on this thread getting hyped for Louisville.

I know it is a long way away but living in Michigan it will be nice to get some cyber motivation when the temps fall and the snow starts piling up.

I agree, take a break.

I'm doing IM KY as well in '09, I won't even start training till late December for strength, then mid January to get started with an actualy plan. I'm just kinda in a do whatever I want mode, bike to work, run with my fiance, do other sports. Swimming will start again in December-ish to give my shoulder as much as a break as possible.

I have a nice plan that I can email you if you would like me to.

It was written by a guy who has gone to Kona (qualifying) and I used it for Ironman Lake Placid this year.

Let me know if you would like to see it.

Best,

Tom

Take a break!

I am in IMKY for 09 too and I would suggest you to NOT focus too long on planned trainings otherwise you will burn yourself too early and you will give up.

I will start strength training end of october and some master swimming until Christmas.

Good that you take part to half marathons in this period and I am doing it too. Running races kepp you fit during the winter and motivate yourself to keep going and with some high intensity.

I am preparing a custom training plan for this event. Maybe later I will share the details with you. Not yet ready
