Subject: Blood Results - Low LDL????
Has anyone heard of Low LDL? I just had some blood work done and my HDL is 91 and my LDL is 24. My overall Cholesterol is 124 which is outside of the range (low). My doctor told me to eat more steak....... I got home and googled it and found it is linked to all kinds of bad stuff. I guess what I want to know is If other athletes who are training have low LDL???? Could it be because we exercise so much????
Lastly my Iron, total is very high at 185 (outside of range) however my Ferritin is 25 and she wants me to get that up to at least 50. I don't understand, I thought if my iron is high that is bad.....
I had blood work done because I have not been feeling like myself lately and my performance/energy levels are going down. Bad deal since I have my first HIM next month.
Thanks for any info!

LDL is generally a calculated value rather than a direct measurement.  What were your HDL, total, and triglycerides?

Triglycerides - 44

Cholesterol, total - 124

HDL Cholesterol - 91

LDL Cholesterol - 24

Female / age 35

I found it is linked to depression, anxiety, Parkinson's disease and cancer. I just wonder if people who work out as much as we do should be grouped in with the rest - we are not average.

Maybe one of the doctors here will chime in, but the body manufacturers all of the cholesterol it needs itself. I am actually shocked that your doctor would tell you to eat more saturated fat to get the "bad" cholesterol number higher.

I am curious to see what you find out.

It's because your HDL is so high.  It's calculated with this formula  LDL = total cholesterol - (HDL + TG/5)] .  Unless there's some other health problem you're suffering from, it's nothing that I would typically worry about.

I don't have my results in front of me, but my cholesterol is quite low, total has never been over 100, LDL in the teens.  It's always been that way and it was when I was a total couch potato with an extremely poor, high fat, diet.  I would guess it's got alot to do with genetics.

I did have an OB/Gyn tell me that I might want to try to get some extra eggs in my diet when I was pregnant (babies need cholesterol to develop their brains) but otherwise all I've been told is "good job".
