Subject: Question on Running.

Hey guys and gals, I have a question concerning my run.  I have just started back running and would like to complete a Sprint Tri next spring.  I am running five times a week and I am up to 3 miles 3 times a week.  During my run I have a problem with getting a hungry feeling.  I swam in High School and played soccer and I don't remember that feeling.  Any advice would be appriciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Feeling hungry while running is not unusual.  As your volume (distance per week) increases, the distance at which this occurs will get longer and longer.  At 3 miles, you do NOT need to take in any calories during the run.  Do make sure that you aren't 'running on empty', but normal caloric intake during the day should take care of that.  Keep running as you are -- your body will adjust.

After much longer distances (like 12-18 miles), the feeling of hunger is a different situation altogether -- then it can indicate that your glycogen stores are getting low . But this can't happen at 3 miles...unless maybe you are running on your hands.

I find, contrary to what a lot of people do, that I have to eat before I got out. Something small, a couple fig newtons, a small bowl of cereal, something like that. I find the biggest factor in killing my workouts is being hungry, so I avoid it. It isn't bonking, nothing close to that, just really uncomfortable and low energy, feeling sluggish. Plus, I hate having my stomach growl when I'm trying to run!
