I swam in the pool today for the first time since May. All summer, I've been training w/ OWS in salt water and wearing my wetsuit. OMG I felt completely dead at the pool. 1500yards seemed like an eternity even though I've done as much as 2 miles in the open water. I was seriously sucking wind by the end of my 3rd 500.

Is this buoyancy in action? I'd think the open turns every 25yds is like a rest inmterval, so I doubt that's it.

yep- salt water + wetsuit = extra buoyancy
not a subtle difference, IMO. oh well, you'll get used to the pool soon enough.

i've had the same exact problem after taking off a month from swimming in the pool.  i love OWS, but i think i need to find a better balance between the two.  anyways, now that summer is fading, i guess i'll be stgoing to pool more often, but next year i think that i'll do 50/50 pool and OWS.

In OWS it is really easy to get into a rythm and just gooooooo. In the pool you have to readjust ever minute when you turn around and reestablish the stroke. I always take longer to settle into a pool rythm. Although with the water temp in the lake dropping into the 50's I do have to get my body used to the water before I really settle in now a days. Brrr, dark, 5:30 am, 35 F air temp 55 F water temp. Man I wish we had an indoor pool in town.

I've heard this from a few people now and the same thing happened to me. It was terrible. I thought I had forgotten how to swim! The sensation only lasts a short time though. Wetsuit or not, 1 ow session = 10 pool sessions (at least for me).

If you swim with a wetsuit all the time, it's like swimming with a pull buoy all the time.  It masks technique defficiencies.  So yes, buoyancy (and lack thereof) in action.

Some of my OWS is w/o wetsuit. I'll run the 1 1/2miles from work down to the beach and do a few hundred yards OWS and no wetsuit. It was just strange at the pool b/c I felt completely sluggish. My glide wasn't as long, my effort level seemed higher. It's tough to compare pace as you're never exactly sure of OWS distance.

I think I prefer OWS now, but the water's a bit cold again. Only about 2-3 more weeks left before it dips into the lower 60s.
