Overall Rank = 73/193

Age Group Rank = 12/28
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5am. Stayed at the RV park at Lake Mead so was pretty close to 'onsite' for the race. 1 mile walk to the starting / transition area.
Event warmup:

Walk from RV to starting area was plenty of warmup carrying all equipment.
Swim
  • 31m 38s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

First 1500m OWS. First wetsuit swim. Made sure to start slow and find some open space to get going. Swim went good. Found someone to draft off which worked great. This was my second triathlon and first olympic so hadn't had a chance to try drafting. Didn't care what my swim time was, my goal was just to finish the event. For the first 100 meters or so had the same sensation many other first time wet suit swimmers mentioned of a tightness in the chest. Just coasted along trying to stay in a rhythm and it got better.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. With more training and practice my swim times will get faster.
Transition 1
  • 03m 3s
Comments:

Made sure I wasn't forgetting anything. No problems with transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 25m 4s
  • 25 miles
  • 17.63 mile/hr
Comments:

Rolling hills throughout course. Steeper hill at approx mile 21 which was tough. Biked at a comfortable pace as I was just looking to finish the event. Nice scenic ride through Lake Mead so was an enjoyable part of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

No problems. Rembered my Garmin this time for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 55m 52s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

This was the first race that I've run a 10k, and only the second time I've ever run that far. LEft knee and lower leg really hurt. Haven't had that problem since my first training runs. I think the problem was having run after the biking segment. More training and distance will help going forward.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Find a bathroom! After that just got some water and laid in the lake to cool down. Was getting pretty hot by that time. Must have been really tough on the half iron particpants. Daytime high was supposed to reach 100.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've only been training for three months so I was very happy with my performance. My goal was to finish the race and enjoy the time which I accomplished.

Event comments:

Very well organized event, at least from my limited triathlon experience.

Packet pickup was the day before the race and included a briefing on the course route and information for new particpants which was informative.

Race Day: Pre race marking and set up was organized and no problems experienced. Swim waves started exactly on time. Swim course well layed out as a U shape so no problems with swimmers coming back the other direction. Bike course pretty much an out and back which spread out the bicycle traffic so no problems with passing or getting passed. Run course was uphill for the entire first half, then turnaround and back down for the second half.

Looking forward to particpating again next year in this event! Congratulations to all the other racers, and thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the event a success!

Wow only 3 moths and you did an Oly under 3 hours nice. Good bike time also. The first 2 and last 2 miles of that run had those fist size rocks. You might have gotten a slight twist off one of them or just had to alter your footing to run on them. I assume your bike is fit well. When mine was fit improperly by the bike dealer (like way off) it affected my knees some. Anyway wow you are signed up for a HIM also. You are on the fast track 8).

I didn't really feel the heat until about 11:00 and it did climb over the next 2-3 hours....
