South Carolina Half Ironman - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Greenwood, South Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
84F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 6h 20m 11s
Overall Rank = 97/157
Age Group = W35-39
Age Group Rank = 22/35
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4AM and drove to a friend's house who was doing the race and gave me a ride. Had 2 chocolate chip cookies, 2 diet cokes, and a clif bar (breakfast of champions!)
Event warmup:

Nothing really.
Swim
  • 38m 59s
  • 2187 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a so- so swim for me. Never really got into a good rhthym. Felt like I was cruising, going slow. Stayed on 4 stroke breathing the whole time. Had to practically stop towards the end so I could pee. Can't really pee and swim very well at the same time, but I didn't want to have to stop and go on the bike.

My wetsuit is a wee bit tight on the shoulders and that did give me some extra fatigue on my bad shoulder. But it wasn't too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Hustle a bit more?
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

I tried to dry my feet off. Had a harder time getting my wetsuit off than in the past. I might want to think about sitting down to do that rather than trying to balance standing up.
What would you do differently?:

nothing that I can think of right at the moment.
Bike
  • 3h 15m 5s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.22 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a huge PR for me. 26:29 better than last year. I couldn't believe how fresh I felt on the bike. My butt didn't even start to bother me until around mile 40 ish.

Was able to stay in the big chain ring for the entire ride. What a difference from last year, where I spent 90% of the day in the little ring..
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Had a hard time getting the gels to stay in my pockets and then my race number ripped from the belt. So it took me a little longer to get out of T2 than I had hoped.
What would you do differently?:

? Not carry gels, use a flask.
Run
  • 2h 21m 23s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I started out on this run just cruising. Everytime I'd try to pick up the pace, my stomach would start to get all wonky on me. So I stayed at my cruising pace. I figured I had built up a huge PR I didn't want to wreck it by puking my guts out on the side of the road.

Had a hard time taking in nutrition. My stomach rolled with the only gel I took, so I started with the coke and the orange slices. Seemed to work good enough, I didn't feel bad when I finished like I had under hydrated and not taken in enough.

Felt like a rock star at the turn around. I heard about 4 or 5 people calling my name and cheering for me. I recognized one as my coach, couldn't see who the others all were, but it energized me for the next few miles!
What would you do differently?:

Do more bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around and drank a regular coke.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Racing IM WI 3 weeks ago.

Event comments:

Officially I took 29:28 off of my time from last year. I knew I had a good chance at PR'ing, but I didn't think I would do it by this amount... I was figuring about :15 or so.

I wonder what I could have done if I was properly recovered from WI and this had been my A race.

Oh, and my age group was fast. The top 15 women in the 35-39 age group were sub 5:50.

What?  I thought you had decided not to do it...  Not sure why I thought that.

Congrats on the demolition of last years time!

Suzanne! Congrats on an awesome PR! Sounds like we were out running at the same time and yes, our age group was super duper fast. I wish I had been one of them because then I would have been done sooner.

Sweet race..congrats on major PR and probably not fully recovered from your IM!!!

It is great to see you have a solid race and awesome bike split...way to adjust and keep that wonky tummy okay.

Now off season...puppy and other wonderful additions to your family

Great job Ironstud.  As I was reading your report two things kept going through my head.  The first was how happy I was I wasn't racing again.  The second was how excited I was too get started up again.

You are such a bada$$ triathlete.  I can't believe you pulled off that race 3 weeks after IM.  Great job!

Nice transition from Moo to the SC half. That's pretty hard core. Nice to see.
