Subject: First Triathlon Suggestions in New England??

Hello, I haven't introduced myself yet, but I'm Sarah... I'm from Springfield, MA.  About a month ago I decided I need to get off of my 254 pound butt and start getting more active.  So I've been cycling and running in the mornings and so far have lost 12 pounds.  My partner is a triathlete - and is very supportive of me!  And her sister is a former swimmer who is also trying to become more active.

So why I am I telling you about them in my first post?!  Well we decided that the 3 of us should do our first triathlon together - as a team.  I will do the bike, my partner will do the run and her sister will do the swim.

Can anyone suggest a good triathlon for us to start with?  We're looking for one that will get us all motivated to continue triathlons - and eventually do them individually instead of as a team!  We just don't know which one to choose - we're willing to stay overnight some where... and make a fun weekend out of it.  We live in Springfield, MA and her sister is in Buffalo, New York - so anywhere in between these areas would be awesome... even Connecticut would be good too.

Any input woul be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!  This site is awesome!

Don't know about the springfield area, but the Pat Griskus sprint tri at Lake Quassipaug in Middlebury, CT is a great event with about 500 people, great BBQ, good shwag, etc.  It is held in July mid week.  Also just google "triathlons in springfield ma" and you will find a bunch of stuff.   There is a relay division. Have fun and good luck

If you're looking for a good tri to try yourself, check out the Greenfield, MA triathlon.  Good tri to start w/.  The OWS is pretty easy, its in a small river and its not that deep (6' at the deepest)  You can standup pretty much anywhere during the swim.  The bike consists of two loops w/ 3 hills (and only 2 are steep) and the run is pretty flat.  Its well organized and the course is clearly marked.  Its the first Sunday in August so you should be able to race a couple as a team (Ludlow has a good one in June, Deerfield/Whately in July for suggestions) and then try Greenfield on your own.

Just be aware that teams in the Greenfield tri can only race the Olympic distance.

Good luck, keep it up and welcome to BT.
