My list for my daughter (excepting some of the things already mentioned)

How to cook at least 3 different kind of meals she likes to eat.

How to fall properly (forwards and backwards, from a stop or moving in either direction, from a distance of at least 5 feet).

How to swim well enough to pass a basic lifeguard test.

How to navigate with a compass and map.

How to build a fire outdoors (lighting with no more then 3 matches).

How to climb (harness and free)

How to fish (at least well enough to feed herself) and clean said fish

How to build basic shelter

How to change components in a PC

How to operate a manual transmission

Basic self defense (lets be honest probably way more then basic)

All these are skills I had before 12.

how to think for themselves.  too many people (kids AND adults) don't know how to do their own data gathering and make their own decisions. ask the questions you need when you don't understand, read multiple media sources - mainstream and independent, talk to everyone on all sides of a debate, find documents and proof of fact and form your own ideas.  in this election season, it seems i run across too many people that haven't done this and really let the commercials convince them who to vote for.

Of your list, I know how to cook and I know how to swim. And I am currently learning how to drive a manual transmission. The rest? Nope.

Hehe, same here. I can cook and swim (both learned as a child), and I know how to climb, but I learned as an adult, and I certainly can't free climb, aside from low-to-the-ground bouldering. I also took taekwondo for a year, but also, as an adult.

Guess I'm a failure

I WISH I had learned to swim as a kid. Something I didn't get, but you better believe is on my list for my kids.

Nope, your parents were failures *wink*

I don't expect her to master everything.  Just get exposed to it and have basic competency.

Heck she's becomming an expert at falling already and she can make pancakes 8)

Neither of my parents have ever been camping, though I think my dad was a boyscout, so maybe he has. My mother is utterly useless outside, but she taught me how to bake/cook and I can do simple sewing stuff by hand, and use a sewing machine, and am very crafty.

My Dad DID teach me to how make a magnet out of a nail and batteries, how to operate a power drill and a toolset, I can use a soldering iron and a jigsaw. He's an engineer, not an outdoorsman (not too much fishing or hunting/shooting (at least not animals!) in the Detroit suburbs). So that is the kind of stuff I learned.

I think my parents taught me PLENTY of skills, even if they are not the ones on your list

LOL.  Same reason I don't really know outdoors stuff.  My folks were raised in Detroit and I was born and raised there- you don't really camp or hunt around those parts.

I remember my mom, telling me about the Golden Rule.

Also younguns should be seen not heard...   I always dislike trying to talk to Dads or Moms and little johnny/janey is trying to put there two cents in.  (I know it can be cute at first, but when they constantly interrupt......)   Explain to them when it is their turn to talk to adults....

The one thing I wish SOMEONE had started to teach me before i left home (and made a mess of it) was how to handle money... up to 12 you wont be ready to know a lot but the basics of saving for what you want and setting a budget are still things Im really bad with

My list for my daughter (excepting some of the things already mentioned)

How to cook at least 3 different kind of meals she likes to eat. Check.

How to fall properly (forwards and backwards, from a stop or moving in either direction, from a distance of at least 5 feet). Check.

How to swim well enough to pass a basic lifeguard test. Check.

How to navigate with a compass and map. Check.

How to build a fire outdoors (lighting with no more then 3 matches). Check, one match. Better yet, no matches.

How to climb (harness and free) Check on harnessed. Can boulder. About to learn how to set pro.

How to fish (at least well enough to feed herself) and clean said fish. This one is on my list. Not fish, but small animals. I have decided that I need to learn how to catch, kill, dress, and prepare meat if lost in the wilderness.

How to build basic shelter Check.

How to change components in a PC Check.

How to operate a manual transmission Check.

Basic self defense (lets be honest probably way more then basic) Check.

All these are skills I had before 12. Mostly, check. Not the driving, though.

Let's see, I am a lifeguard. I'm on search and rescue, so I've got a bunch of those down hard. I've only ever owned stick-shifts, and learned to drive on my father's leased stick! Other than the killing something for food, I'm down with that stuff.

What I think kids need to learn? Respect. For themselves: body, mind and soul. For others: body, mind and soul. All else flows from that.

- sew. Boys & girls. Buttons and patches at a minimum.

- whistle. And when not to whistle.

- knife safety.

- gun safety. Even if you don't have a gun in the house.

I missed the knife safety speech in cubscouts because I was at the hospital getting stitches because I cut myself with my swiss army knife. I always thought that was funny.

Things kids (or anyone) should know that haven't already been mentioned:
How to tie a proper knot.
