Total Time = 2h 25m 30s
Overall Rank = 52/261
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 20/40
Pre-race routine:

walked 2 miles to the host hotel and sat around eating pastries. Mmmmmm, pastries.
Event warmup:

jogged around for 20 minutes or so with a teammate. Did some striders and positioned myself toward the frontish.
Run
  • 45m 54s
  • 6.82 miles
  • 06m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

The course a very technical run through narrow streets. 24 turns on each 1.7 mile lap. 4 laps total. I positioned myself near the front thinking that because of the turns, letting people pass me would be better than me trying to fight up the pack. I started off a little too fast but I forgot to put my battery back in my foot pod....so it was difficult to know how fast I was going.
lap 1 6:10 avg
lap 2 6:37 avg
lap 3 6:52 avg
lap 4 7:20 oops!

What would you do differently?:

Remember the battery in my foot pod.
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

The worst transition I've ever had. So bad it was comical. Put my helmet on, didn't buckle it immediately, why? Don't know. In ITU you MUST have your helmet buckled, even to walk your bike around so my buddy was yelling at me through the fence to buckle it. Couldn't get my shoes on, the back kept folding down, dropped the bike trying to get the straps out from underneath the helmet...you get the picture.

So bad I was laughing as I ran out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Everything.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 8s
  • 26.8 miles
  • 21.40 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was nothing like I've ever raced. 6 laps of a straight away with roundabouts at each end with a spur int the middle. So, two roundabouts and 4 90 degree turns each loop. I never went below 21 and was above 23 for much of the ride (on the out and back) but take into account the slow downs and turns and there you have it. SO MUCH FUN to do those corners though.
What would you do differently?:

Get a better bike fit? I look so weird on the bike. It was very comfortable but I need a more aggressive position.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Good. Smooth. Good. Did I say good?
What would you do differently?:

Run faster
Run
  • 21m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

This run was tough, I was burning up. My legs felt great off the bike but I was dead. I had little energy. I felt as though I was barely running. A few people passed me at the beginning and I could do nothing to stay on their heels. After the first lap I was inspired by running near the finish line, through the American cheering sections, flags waving, people yelling for me...awesome. I picked it up a bit but was making no progress until I saw Dean, a guy I met in CO at the 8 hours of tri. He told me I looked like a @#$$ing rockstar and that I needed to dig down deep and pass 5 people. He made me chuckle and I decided he was right, last lap of the world championships might as well give it my all. I had not passed anyone up until that point. I passed 9 people in the last mile of the race. I reached the finishers chute with no kick, no extra speed, totally spent. Awesome.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Walked into the athlete's village and congratulated those who finished before me. Found Zilla and left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

only 10 weeks of training. I was trained to run a 100 miler the middle of summer and had to switch gears to train for this race. I know that when I have a whole season to dedicate to speed I will be faster.

Event comments:

This was a tough race. Not the type of race I'm used to doing. That being said- it was awesome. I did not expect to compete for a medal, but my pal Drew was quick to point out I was just 7 minutes out of the medals. 7 minutes?? Totally in my grasp. I can't wait to get back to worlds and bring home a medal.

If you have the chance to do this, to race at the World Championships for your country you should jump at the chance. This was the coolest race I've ever done. To be able to put on the Red, White and Blue, run a race with USA across your chest with people chanting and waving the stars and stripes...very cool.

Wow...very cool.  Sounds like you left everything you had on the course - and you even had time for a stand-up routine in T1.  You rawk!!

Ouch on the dreaded 'Checking your watch Finisher's Photo.' Good race, I am glad you could laugh at yourself during T1, and for pulling strong on the 2nd run.

Impressive, to say the least.

You will destroy that course next year if you make it your focus.

Well done, you should be proud.

Great race.  I'm glad you could laugh about the transition.  But you weren't laughing AT you.  You were laughing WITH you!

Plus you got to race in Italy!
