Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30 and Brett picked me up (BT'er) had a zone bar and green tea, this was my "A" race for the year
Event warmup:

Walked around getting the lay of the land.
Swim
  • 36m 6s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt great on this swim - was pushing for about 35 minutes but 36 is great for me. I was relaxed during the swim never had any issues at all. That was the beginning of what I thought would be a great day - NOT - my 1st complaint, my bike was so far I had to run through dirt so the feet were mud shoes by the time I got to my bike.
Transition 1
  • 04m 17s
Comments:

I was slow making sure I had all the goodies for the ride, so not surprises here.
What would you do differently?:

Not change a think - I wanted to make sure I had everything in order
Bike
  • 3h 45m 16s
  • 56 miles
  • 14.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Well, here is the downfall, Hydration, I thought I was taking enough, every 10 minutes my computer would remind me but clearly it was not enough. I would say at mile 30 my lower back started to hurt, by mile 42 it really hurting so I could not ride aero, but had to go down then back up to get any comfort. Then the last hills to transition I could not take deep breaths and it hurt, so I pushed through thinking the run I will feel better.
What would you do differently?:

DRINK, DRINK, DRINK
Transition 2
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

Very good, even with my lower back
What would you do differently?:

nothing, again I wanted to make sure I did not miss anything
Run
  • 3h 14m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 14m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

OK, at this point the wheels had fallen off the bus. I started to run and within 40 feet I realized that I could not, my kidneys were killing me, I thought drink at every station but I could never catch up - so I had to walk the whole route - last complaint - there were trails that we had to run on, you had to watch out from the holes in the ground, dust everywhere, so the run was harder then normal, but still walking did not have any issues seeing the holes.
What would you do differently?:

DRINK, DRINK, DRINK
Post race
Warm down:

Finished with kids in stride, went straight over to the med tent to make sure it was not anything serious. Doctor asked me if I had "Pee'ed" I said "what is that," no I didn't - he grabbed a Gatorade and said start drinking. I would say there was a bunch in the med tent for de-hydration.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

HYDRATION, period - I under estimated the amount I would need on the ride.

Event comments:

Only the 3 complaints about the mud, road and trails but it was a top notch event.

Rough break. Work on your nutrition for next year and I am sure you will have a way better race.
