Pinehurst, North Carolina
United States
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 28m 7s
Overall Rank = 120/515
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 13/59
Pre-race routine:

Set the alarm for 5am, got up, ate a Cliff bar, 1/2 bannana and had some coffee. We left at 5:30 so that I could get to packet pick up when it started at 6am. It was not as cold out as I had expected, so I was happy.
Event warmup:

Decided to skip the warmup this time, I kinda figured that any benefit that I would get from warming up would be lost waiting around cold and sweaty.
Swim
  • 24m 53s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was very foggy at the start, you could not see the first set of markers. There were people on surfboards that I could see, so I just made sure that they were on my left for the first few hundred yards. There were people swimming sideways looking for the markers, and I would swear that I saw someone swimming towards me at one pont. Once you got closer to the turn buoy it was clear.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, my goal was to come out of the swim top 10 in my AG, after the last few races I've decided that for me the best way to go is all out, no swim the first third easy, build the second, etc. I don't seem to get that tired and when I try to pace myself I always seem to go too slow.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Good T1, no issues
Bike
  • 1h 09m 49s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.36 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt like I had a pretty good bike, I got passed by a couple of people in my age group, but I passed more that a few, mostly on the hills.
This was a bike PR on this course for me, my previous best bike was 1:14:06 in 2006
What would you do differently?:

Not much, can't train on hills if you don't have them.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Nothing special, felt pretty good.
Run
  • 49m 55s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

PR run for me on this course, first time I have broken 50 minutes. All in all a pretty decent run, my goal was not to walk at all, no matter how slow I had to go to keep running. I had some extra motivation, there were a couple of guys in my AG from our tri club and I knew that they were behind me.
What would you do differently?:

Run more hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Went and sat in the lake for a while, not exactly an ice bath but it felt good. Gotta love the Milky Way bars after a race:)

Event comments:

Ran into Carol (Running in NC) before the race, she looked like she had a good race.
This was a PR race for me by about 7 minutes, most of that is the bike. Go figure, riding more makes you faster:)

MILKY WAY BARS??? I DIDN'T SEE ANY MILKY WAY BARS!!! You earlier waves must have eaten them all by the time the midlife crisis females finished.

Great race report. All your times were great, and I don't know how you can do hills at all if you can't train on them. They used to completely wipe me out until I did alot of hill work. Kudos to you. Wish I had seen you after the race to say hi (and steal one of those milky way bars!)

Awesom job!  Congratulations on a PR!!  Your run split was great, especially after that hilly bike.  That is what I need to do for my run next time - put someone behind me that I know.  I am sure that would keep me motivated enough to not get passed.
