Total Time = 5h 04m 30s
Overall Rank = 196/1929
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 10/119
Pre-race routine:

Same as always.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 23m 42s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was disappointed when the swim became wetsuit legal. That and the short swim took away some advantage from me. Starting in wave 13 of 14 made the swim an obstacle course the entire time.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. I totally loafed the swim as usual. Swimming at sea level is so much easier but I don't really push harder as I should.
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

Was very dizzy again and had to take it slow.
What would you do differently?:

Be a minute faster.
Bike
  • 2h 31m 35s
  • 56 miles
  • 22.17 mile/hr
Comments:

This ride didn't go well. Messed up my computer trying to reset it in the dark so I had no idea of how fast I was riding. I had enormous amounts of bike traffic to pass since I started so late. Often I'd have to pass people who were riding three abreast and was being blocked from passing very often. It was not much fun. Didn't push very hard as I was having trouble with the humidity and nervous about cramping on the run. Drank six bottles of gatorade and ate clif blocs. Wasn't that hot but I was sweating so badly I was worried. This balance of effort on the bike so I can still run 13.1 is hard to figure out. I think I should have pushed 1 mph harder as I felt almost too fresh on the start of the run and was still dead tired at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Get better on the run so I can push the bike hard.
Transition 2
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Was going to run without a shirt as every other race I've been in has allowed but I was stopped and told it was illegal and had to run back to my transition to get one. That wasted at least 0:45. Otherwise good.
Run
  • 2h 03m 55s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Very hilly. Even though I really wanted to go under 2:00 I felt this was the best part of my race. At Boulder I was pretty much exactly MOP. Here I was 524/1929. Felt very good off the bike. I did the first three in 24:30. The next three felt good and then I slowly degraded into a death march but still 8 minutes faster than Boulder on a much harder course. I did pretty well with my hydration but a couple minutes after the race I got a very severe dehydration headache and started cramping pretty badly. Got two liters of fluid via IV and was shipshape.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

IV in med tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Should have pushed both the swim and bike a little harder but that could have hurt my run. So I really don't know.

Event comments:

The race was great but I went down to Austin with a long-time friend who was supposed to race the Aquabike and bailed on me. He then had no interest in the race and made of bunch of other plans for us. So I missed out on all the Triathlon festivities and hanging with my Texas tri friends. Very disappointing. Also my sister got really sick and so she and her husband couldn't go. Bummer. Also, since I finished so late and had to visit the med tent I didn't get to meet up with other BTers after the race. Again, very disappointing.

That's a bummer they made you go back for your shirt...never heard of a race not allowing racers to go shirtless.  Solid times al around though...smoking fast swim!  Nice job!

Speedy racing!

Sorry I didn't get to meet you.  I heard them "yell" at one other person that he had to put a shirt on.  That's weird.  It was proposed as a rule last year but I thought it got shot down...

Hmmm...the 2 legs (swim/bike) you wonder if you should have pushed harder, but on the swim you were 107/1929 and then 97/1929 on the bike   I'm afraid that IS FAST!  Much faster and that dehydration headache and cramping might have happened sooner...like on the run - two words for the extreme electrolyte loss: Infinit Nutrition

Seems to me like you put out a great effort and had a super fast race!!!!  You should be proud.

solid race!!!! sorry the events outside of the race didnt go according to plan. its also a bummer the faster AGs started later and had to deal with the masses on the swim and bike. enjoy the fall and winter and best of luck next season!

Very nice race for a guy still figuring things out!  Glad we got to see you guys before the swim.  Wish it could have been over beers though.  I agree with the OAToad.  We need to come North and see how we do up there.

Enjoy your ski/hiking season!!

Great race, great report. I like how almost as an afterthought, you mention the two units of fluid you got from the I V. Tough stuff!

Great race.  You were in my AG and must have been one of the speedy fish I tried to hang onto on the swim.  Awesome bike ride.

Oh, the shirt issue is a WTC rule.  DQ if torso isn't covered.

Great race and for beating Boulder time on the run on a harder course!  For not being used to the Texas heat, you definitely overcame it!  Way to go Steve!

Congratulations on a top ten finish in your age group. Those were some serious swim and bike times too.
