Returning from my lunch-break work out, I found my locker with my lock missing and a bright orange "Gym property" lock in it. Management said someone had thought they forgot theyr new lock combination called asked them to break into it. It turned out to be my locker that had a similar lock (just like 100 others in there too).

Nothing was taken (that I can tell yet), and they replaced the lock but now I have to remember the new combination that is not even close to my old one (no it's not programmable). Oh yeah, my old one was easy to remember cause (coincidentally), was off by one digit from my birthday.

I'm so ticked (for lack of a better word). Anyone ever have this done to them?

No, but I have one of those cylinder locks that you can set to your own number.  It is much quicker to open than a combination lock, doesn't require a key and can be set to any four digit number that you can remember.  You might want to check them out.

I was concerned that something like this could happen. Most everyone uses the generic silver Master combo locks with the black face. I added some colorful duct tape around the edge of mine to set it apart from the rest when looking at a wall full of lockers with the same lock. Kinda like putting the colorful tag on your suitcase so you can find it quickly among the other 300 black suitcases.

That sucks. I hope he didn't take anything, you would think there would be a way to verify whose locker it was before they broke the lock.

A funny, not so funny story. During spring break during rowing we used to leave the boat house open, but lock the office where everyone kept their personal belongings while we were out on the water. Since we had to be on campus during spring break our coach passed out our stipends at the boat house one day. This was supposed to be our grocery money for the week since the cafeteria was closed. Some one broke in and stole the money, and left everyone a dollar.

This started happening frequently, so my coach decided to hide a video camera in the locker room to catch the theif. They stole the video camera. Can you say WHAT!? Luckily I didn't have my money at the lake the day it was stolen, but I did leave my keys in the office and my CD's were gone out of my car. Didn't have to break a window or anything. I think they got our schedule down and just waited till we were on the water. They had two hours to get whatever they wanted. Let's just say the problem has been fixed, but what a lesson to learn.

I like the idea of personalizing your lock. Plus it makes your lock better than everyone elses.

My lock is princess pink with purple polka dots.  I've never seen another one like it!!

Although you might want to choose a manly color so the boys don't beat you up behind the lockers.

yup, I also have a one of a kind looking lock. Bright orange , and it`s used by a 4 digit number. One day I had a girl put her car keys up on a hook and then just close the locker thinking no one would use it. Well, along came me and didn`t see the keys, put all my stuff in there and locked it. She just had to sit in the locker room for 1 hour before I came back and opened it. What an idiot she was!!

Wendi,

That is a great idea. Believe me I don't have a problem with using a pink lock with polka-dots. Now, to look for a matching swim cap....

When I worked as a carpenter in my college years, we all used the same exact tools and they got mixed up/stolen/claimed by others. I went out and got a $1 can of bright neon orange spray paint and marked all my tools, problem solved. You could do this with your master lock to make it unique. I think I'll take my own advice and do the same....

Wouldn't recommend it on your bike, though!

I can never remember my combination either.  What I eneded up doing was writing it on the bottom of my water bottle.  Since I have my water bottle with me, whenever I'm at the gym, I don't have to worry about forgetting the numbers

Hmmm, this has me thinking....

What about just engraving "Property of" and your first/last name on both sides.  Would have to be one of those smooth sided brass locks I think but that would be two-fold:

1. You can tell which one is yours.

2.  Hopefully, a responsible gym worker would check ID before cutting it.

Think that would work?  I might give that a try....
