Overall Rank = 1457/1951
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 87/127
Pre-race routine:

3 things you should typically NOT do 2 days before a marathon!
1) get your nutrition plan from rstocks3 in BT chat.
2) go to google and try to find a plan on running a marathon (JeffGalloway.com).
3) think to yourself..hmmm.. maybe I should have trained and ran longer than 14 miles before the marathon.
I did all 3 and yet I finished!!

Nutrition included: Lots of water, 2 GU's every hour mixed with water. 1 endurolyte every hour, sports beans w/caffiene, snickers bar and starbursts.

Got up at 4:30, got dressed, ate my banana and PB bagel. Stopped at Kwik trip to get my decaf/caf coffee. Asked Craig on the drive..WTF am I doing? Yet I decided to keep a positive attitude...I CAN RUN A MARATHON!!
Event warmup:

Stretched a bit while talking to Craig. He was my rock that day..kept me calm and in a great mood. Telling me "You can do this." This has been my biggest challenge yet. I am not a strong runner and this stand alone Mary definitely scared me much more than my 2 back to back HIM's.
Run
  • 4h 44m 20s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

I used a 4:1 method. Was not quite sure how it was going to work, but it seemed to fit me well. I was able to stay consistant without tiring quickly. And had so much energy the whole run. I usually start out to fast in the beginning, so I kept looking at the garmin to make sure I stayed at a 10 min mile pace. I wore my watch on my left arm to keep track of when I needed to run/walk etc. Mile 1-8 went quick. Felt really strong. Saw Craig at mile 6, which helped a lot. Mile 8 I had to stop and wait in line to pee, which messed up my split a little. Mile 9-17 I felt even better. Made sure I was GUing and drinking water often. Mile 18 I started to feel the pain a bit in my quads, but very tolerable. I knew if I just kept the pace I had I could finish strong. Mile 19-21 was ok. Saw my stalker again at mile 22 and I think he was surprised that I was still feeling so good. I was looking forward to Mile 25 when I would see PeterAK with my beer. Saw Peter, but no beer. He gave me a high five and away I went to finish strong. I tried to give it all I had the last mile but had nothing left. Met Craig at the finish line with a big hug and kiss and I knew then that THIS is what I love to do!! I love waking up every morning and realizing that ANYTHING is possible! If the mind can believe it, the body can achieve it!!!
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Be a little more prepared. Would like to run 9's next time.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around to get the muscles to relax. Ate half a banana, drank more water. Talked to Travis and Sandi. Thanks you two for coming and cheering me on! Donks are the best. Then Craig took me to Kopps for a yummy burger!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training

Event comments:

Love this race! Beautiful course! Will be back next year!

Kick azz job Amy! Way to keep a steady pace with no let down. I guess long runs for marathon training is overrated.

You saw your stalker again? But I wasn't anywhere near there! Congrats on a great race, AJ! You are really building an impressive athletic resume this year-- 3 HIM's, a Marathon, PB's... just one more to add next year! Great job!

14 mile run as the long run in training.  Ha, classic.  But you still crushed it and are now at marathon status.  Good race AJ!

I noticed nothing regarding the post-race cool-down, stretching, icing, or massaging.  I'm a little concerned about that.

You have come a looooooooong in one year's time, Sunshine!  The mental fortitude is there - now your physical aptitude is needing to be prepared.

Looking forward to some training sessions along the way to keep you going.

BTW - Craig was only being nice and keeping you focused so that he could get laid later.
