I saw it years ago, as many on this board had, and thought it would be a great thing to do - and I had it as one of my life goals.

Years went by and I kept saying I would do a Tri soon (whenever soon was I really wasn't sure).

I got to the stage I knew I needed to do more aerobic activity and I just didn't see the point of running just to run - and I didn't think that running for a marathon was an exciting thing.

So I decided to do a tri - and completed the Chicago Triathlon this year - I was/am hooked!

This is the same bike I currently race on. I got mine for free two years ago. Hoping to upgrade next year.

I saved my money from part time jobs and mowing lawns to buy the Dave Scott signature "tri- bike" (it was a road bike with a long wheel base, and a biopace chainring).

I grew up swimming (all the way to college when I just got too burned out...) and I remember watching Kona back when I was young and thinking the swim looked like fun BUT how did these people then bike and run that far?!!?  I wanted to do it but was NEVER a runner so I forgot about it....fast forward about 20 years and a bunch of weight---this past spring I decided it was time to do something about the 50lbs I had put on in the last 7 or 8 years so I started to ride my 15 yr old MTB...then the pool opened so I started to swim a little---then some guys I work with mentioned that they were doing a sprint tri (I had NEVER even heard of such a thing---I always thought tris were IM long...)---I thought hmmmm a 5K isn't soooo bad so I started to try and run....well I just completed my first sprint and I gotta say I now even ENJOY the running!!!!  I love the fact that I have a purpose to my "training" and I have direction for my competitive fire......

I've never really been involved in athletics and was never really encouraged to try (musical child) but was always curious.  Liked individual activities vs. team sports (party because I never learned to play them!).  When I turned 38 I felt this need to try something - do something for myself.  Read this quote, "Whenever you do some form of physical exercise, when you demand the maximum from your body, the mind gains a strange spiritual strength".  I wanted to experience this.  Couldn't figure out what I should do... boot camp?  Then saw some pics of someone in the Malibu Tri and decided I would try it.  Took me a month to gain the courage to tell anyone.  Have only done three mini's to date but liking it and looking forward to next summer's tri season.

My wife.

Seriously, my wife got talked into doing a triathlon as part of the corporate team where she works. I was a runner who'd just finished his 1st marathon and was looking to start cross training on my new road bike. Since I'd been on the swim team in HS (30 years ago), the idea of doing the tri with her seemed reasonable and like it might be fun.

Eighteen months later, I've got my first half iron under my belt (and my running is faster than it was before the tri training).

I started running again about 4 years ago after a 15 year hiatus.  I live on a lake and there is a triathlon that takes place right on my lake.  For 2 years, I took the kids up and we cheered on the people as they ran by.  The whole time I was watching, I was thinking this is really cool and I should be out there doing that.  Well I turned 40 this year and thought if I am going to do this, I am not getting any younger.  This year my kids watched me run by, if you can call it running.  I did one more tri this past summer and now I am determined to get better at this.

The best reward for me in all of this is my ten year old daughter doing a triathlon a month after mine and my six year old already talking about doing one next year.

My 41'st birthday was approaching & I realized that I felt like I was 90.  I'd spent the last 3 years being sick & spending way too much time in doctor's offices being told that it was just how my life was going to be from now on & I ought to face it.

I remembered watching Kona on tv a few years back & thinking, "how cool!"  A few friends at work had done Sprint distance triathlons, & had tried to get me to train with them, but I always had the excuse that I was too sick to do anything like that.

I finally decided that I could either curl up & die or kick it in gear & see what I was made of.

Here's what I figured out last weekend - finishing a sprint tri is just basic fitness for this 41 year old!  Now it's on to kickin' at another level!  I'll never be that sick & whinny chick again!

Thank heavens I got into tris!!!

Friends at work started doing it. I was never a good swimmer and when I started training, I got so frustrated because I could only do like 50 yards before stopping. People here gave me encouragement and told me to keep practicing. Now I have no problem doing 1000 yards and it's all done doing freestyle. The support on this board is fantastic.

I'd like to be able to point to one thing but I'm not sure I can.  In college several of my good friends were triathletes, I admired them and always said I wanted to do one but was always so scared of the swim.  Over 10 years later I was out of shape after a broken leg, down in the dumps in many aspects of my life when a friend suggested I train up and meet her for race, she had never done one before.  It sparked something, we never met for that race but she's now done 3 or 4, I've done two and started training for an Oly, I can't get enough of it.  Obviously because I'm writing this when I should be working!

After the workouts and the races I'd say it is the challenge of it all that motivates me, I feel great when I hit a new personal best for swimming or biking and then can still manage to get my legs going on a run!  Someone said it in a recent post as well, this website, the encouragement has been great!

My father who decided to take up running just for some wayto kill time while he was working abroad.  He had never run before or done anykind of physical activity in quite some time.  He was not in bad shape, but was not even close to good running shape.  After a year and a half, he finished a marathon.  I thought, "hey if he can do it, I can finish a tri."  He did his marry in November.   I did my full Xterra in May and followed it up with a sprint in August.  Now I have my sights set on Augusta 70.3 with an oly and sprint in between.  I am loving the training.  Especially today when I had a really crappy run, but can't wait to redeem myself next time!!!
