Subject: IMAZ Bike Course

Here's a post from the forum on cruciblefitness.com.  They claim that the bike course at IMAZ is going to change.

Don't know if this is legit or not.  At this point, consider it a big, fat internet rumor.

**************

Just got through speaking to the Race Director at IRONAZ. BIKE
COURSE CHANGE -- Three loop bike course with a little more in
downtown Tempe instead of current course as outlined on IRONAZ
website. Instead of going to Shea and turning at Taco Bell - turn
at Gilbert about 6 miles short of Shea #150;for the LB contingent that
is about where I flatted on Saturday and where Anne Marie flatted on
Sunday. Being told course will be similar to SOMA 1/2 due to some
problems with Alma School road in terms of traffic diversion.

Should be flatter and faster course. Barricades in downtown Tempe
along Mill Ave (ASU bar scene) will make for good spectating.

To further the rumors, here is a little info posted here locally by someone doing the event. I took out the names.

"XYZ mentioned yesterday that he had heard that some cyclists riding the course came upon some wild dogs and maised them. The Indians were pissed off and told Ironman North Am that the course could no longer enter their reservation. How screwed up is that. I probably would have maised the wild dogs too for protection."

I heard the rumors too. We are heading out there this weekend and I have no idea where to ride. Maybe I will do 112 one mile loops around the transition area

Now that's just silly.  I am sure that IMNA would at the very least do 56 2-mile out and backs.

To throw more rumors on the mill....

What about the swim?  It was already pretty shakey and now there is a lot more rain to get rid of.

I don't even want to think about the swim. I think in the next 5 weeks it will dry up in AZ. That should make the lake OK I hope.

The course has been updated. Looks like 3 loops now. Anyone in AZ have any comments on the change?

They took out all the rollers and the steep hill through the Fountain hills area. This is going to be a fast course. We are going to turn around at the top of the hill on Beeline, but it is a hill that is 200 feet over 10 miles. The only thing would be the winds and the crappy road conditions through Alma school.

On the bright side, it should give us plent of opportunities to see the race leaders...

On the dim side, it is now a triple out and back, with a little bit more of the loop thrown in for good measure the fourth time around.

I don't know whether to be bummed that we are not getting as good of an adventure or psyched that we will have a rather flat, fast course.

Believe me, once you have seen the first 5 miles of road out there, it is the same as the other 23 miles we would have seen, minus the world's largest fountain
I am glad that we will be riding really close to the transition area. Lots of spectators...hopefully

Of course, I'm only volunteering for this race but I like the new course layout from a spectator’s point of view, plenty of opportunity to see you folks flying by at mach 2.

That it's a flatter course is probably good, but then again, most of it would have seemed flat to me anyway. It does appear to be a fast course, but in the initial part of the "loop", you're going to be turning - or turning around - every mile or so. Just enough time to get some speed up to slow down to make a turn.

THe good news is, I should be able to see how far in front of me Phil is at all times!

Don't you mean that I'll have a good idea of the gap that I have to make up after the swim!
