Subject: Race Day Question: T-Area Arrival?

Quick question here ... just found out that the transition/rack area for the event I'm doing this Sunday opens at 5:30am.  Is it prudent to be there right as it opens, any advantages?  Do you get to choose the location of your rack, and is it typically first-come, first-served?

A few of the other BTers and I have arranged to meet at a nearby Starbucks before the race ... at 5:30am   Would hate to miss that, but if I should be there right as the racks open, that might be the priority.

Advice?

I did the Chicago triathlon that had 8700 people - the T area was a bit crazy.

If you are concerened with the best time possible you should get their when it opens to get an end spot for your bike - if you would rather get some extra sleep go that route. A good event should have it layed out well enought that there isn't a HUGE disadvantage.

I for one would choose to get a rack as close as possible to where you can mount the bike - it allows a quicker T1/T2.

Most racks are marked per wave - so you want the best spot for your wave group.

Unless you are looking for elite times I would opt for the fun and memories of the pre-race coffee over saving 30 seconds in the T's.

Pretty much what I thought ... thanks!!

It depends on the race... I've been in races with everything from completely open racking (set up wherever you want/can find a spot) to races with specific racking spots for your race number. I would say the majority of races I've been in have racks designated for a range of numbers (i.e., one rack for race numbers 1000 - 1050, one for 1051 - 1100, etc...) If you really want to know, you can email the race director and find out. Most likely meeting folks for coffee before the race won't cause you any problem....

All the races I've done had open racks, first-come first-served, and I like to set up at the end of a rack near the transition exit. Also, being as obsessive-compulsive as  most other multisport athletes, I just like to be there as early as possible, one of the first in line for check-in and transition set-up so I can check my equipment umpteen times and have plenty of time pre-race to zone out. Or zone in. Or whatever it is I do.

I try to get there early to set up.  Then I can get into pre-race chit chat without worrying

I go early.  Even when I just watch, I'm there before 90% of the racers.  What cracks me up is we're up at 4:30 to train, but some guys cant get to the race by 6:30.

Every tri I have done the rack area has pre-assigned spots based on your bib number.  But the pre-race set up can still be hectic with trying to get your chip and body marks.

You don't say what time the race starts or what your pre-race routine is.

If the race doesn't start until, say 8am, I would say you have time for coffee.  No reason to wait around before the race for 2 1/2 hours.  Just gives you more time to get nervous.

Pre-race meeting is at 6:50am, and I assume the first wave will start at or around 7:00am.  This is my first, so I don't really have a "routine", per se.  I'll stretch early and I'd like to get out in the water a bit, maybe run a little, but not too much warm up ... I prefer to just go.

I'll need the coffee and encouragement more than I'll need a spot up front

Then that's what you should do. There will be space for you regardless of when you get there. Leave the prime spots for people who need every second they can get. When you're in that position yourself it makes sense to be there when transitions opens - if it's open racking of some sort.

Good question.  I'm dong the Hermosa Beach tri as well and it will be my first one.  When I tell my wife and kids we need to be there at 5am to park and get the bike to the transition area by 5:30 they look at me like I'm crazy (I live an hour away from the race).  I've been trying to paint a mental picture of what I'm going to do in T1 and T2 but have a hard time visualizing something I have no clue about.  Tri Lab is hosting a clinic on Saturday that will cover some of these things (I hope).  Check the race web site for more info.

Like others have said, it depends on the race.  Also I would factor in your travel issues (whatever they may be).  All my races this year were 40-80 minutes away from home.  Too close to justify a hotel stay, too far to get there when they are first open (OK, I could have left at 3-4 am, but that's not going to happen).  Since you are meeting some other BT'ers, if the racking is open, at least you are all in the same boat.  And if the racking is assigned, no difference.  Just don't get there too late.  My last race I did not budget enough time for the portapotty line, and had pre-race sprint to get to the water with my wave.  (According to mrs gearboy who was spectating, there were a quite a few people in the same boat at that race, and some even getting in with the next waves!)

I did Hermosa last year and got to the T-area when it opened and there were already a lot of people there. It is a large, and crowded T-area. I say get there at 5:30. They will tell you what rack you have to be on, but if you're early enough you can rack it at the end. You'll have extra time, but you can always warm up, stretch, or of course...go hang out at Starbucks!

I like to be there early so I don't feel rushed and worried.  Also, the 2 tris I have done had assigned racks.  Good luck and have fun!

Wow lots of first time racers in this thread and that includes myself which is racing for the first time on sunday the 19th.  The race i'm attending is a 7 am start and I plan to be there around 5 am just because I have no idea what to expect!  I did the entire International distance just today and it was a blast!  Did the swim / bike and run just to make sure im ready for it!!  transition times took place at my apartment and docked in at a total of 3 minutes 40 seconds.  Im sure it will be different on race day.
