Pre-race routine:

Desperation to find the potty! For about half the drive down that morning (45 miles?) I had to go....BAD! And not the easy kind, either. Maybe that's what made me feel sick by the time I got there.
Event warmup:

Tried not to puke right before the race. Waded out into the water, and then swam around to stay warm. The swim leg is the actual warmup, right?
Swim
  • 10m 45s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lined up on the outside, as usual. Avoided the havoc of the pack rounding the bouy. Felt some tricep fatigue left over, but did okay.
What would you do differently?:

um, go faster. Duh!
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

after my nap, T1 went okay. Maybe if the dude with the antique hadn't racked on top of my stuff, I would have been better off. And I thought I got there late! Luckily, I was in totally the wrong gear (54x12) coming out of trans, so I had to dork around with that.
What would you do differently?:

pull my head out of my butt.
Bike
  • 28m 34s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good going up to redline and backing off to recover. If I was healthier, I may have been stronger.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Getting my socks on seemed like quantum physics for some reason. Somehow I got out of T2, perhaps by miracle.
What would you do differently?:

Not be sick the week before?
Run
  • 20m 58s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt like a giant pile of dookie, even from the get-go. I almost quit 30 feet out of T2. If James hadn't come by me, I would have totally slacked off. I gained some time in the uphills, but didn't have any gas in the tank to close at the finish. I was deep in the red zone by the final push, and just couldn't process enough O2 with my lungs clogged up with junk.
What would you do differently?:

Not get sick. Seriously, I need to be like an astronaut the week before a big race; totally isolated in a germ free environment.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sick and felt like poo.

Event comments:

Talking with the RD, about 1/5 of the volunteers actually showed up. Traffic control sucked.

Nice job even with feeling like dookie! I would feel like dookie if that's what it takes to run that fast It was great seeing you down at Hickory Knob. Congrats on placing in the SCTS. May 2009 be even faster
